New buyers, odd user names. Scammer?

I had a new buyer order something then months later claimed it back though Paypal saying they never ordered anything. Their user name was a weird mix of numbers and letters <Removed>.

I didnt think much of it at the time but over the last few weeks I have had multiple buyers that have joined that day and have weird mixed up user names and zero feedback. They always order one item, pay, then I dont hear from them again or receive feedback.

I am sort of waiting for them to open a claim(the 1st one made me jumpy). The items are not expensive or anything, ive been selling for years and never had this before, its just odd that this has been happening recently.

Is there some type of new scam or something I am not aware of or do you think I am just seeing danger where there is nothing?

Quite possible that one, some or all of them are scammers but I think if someone buys as a guest they will have a username such as you have described

Could be just people buying as guests on ebay.     Jumbled letters & numbers is most often an ebay generated user name associated with guests

Yes, guest accounts. I was under the impression too that guest accounts had no buyer protection? I guessing then that the OP's buyer must have claimed a chargeback. Very sneaky if they did.

Just because they used ebay as a guest it does not mean they did not have a paypal account.

That smacks of a deliberate intention to defraud.

Also, if someone pays through paypal as a guest and needs to open a dispute they can open a paypal account and have the transaction transferred into it and then open the dispute.

My guess as to why you've not seen it before is you blocked buyers with low feedback (ie new accounts). Ebay removed that function fairly recently.

Personally, I don't think it is any more or less risky than any other customer. My last 2 charge backs were both accounts with normal looking usernames and over 10 feedback. Both for low value items that I could not send with tracking if I wanted to make a profit 😞
