There should be some method of penalty for bidders that "Win" at any cost and then disappear. I have had a number of these that really dont care. I would not mind (so much) if they said immediately on winning that it was a mistake so 2nd chance etc could be utilised. The item sits waiting for ages in spite of invoices etc.
Maybe if we had an automatic cancel in a NO PAY after three days unless bidder applies to extend. At least there is contact after the auction. This applies especially where an item although not perishable but needs to be specialty kept eg plants.
How can these types of bidders be penalised? They are actively fighting to win the item and then nothing.

I don't even bother with auctions anymore, too many of these people nowadays. My items are all BIN with immediate payment required.

You don't have much experience, so probably confused by the replies. There is a penalty for buyers who don't pay, but you need to know how to penalise them.
First up, set up buyer requirements. They are used to block certain people. Main one is to block people with 2 or more unpaid item strikes in the last 12 months. Weeds out the serial non payers. Also tick the box to block people in locations you don't post to. Down the bottom is a box to tick to apply to current and future listings, and to stop blocked buyers from contacting you. https://offer.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BuyerBlockPreferences
Next, when someone doesn't pay, are you opening a non payer dispute? If you don't, then you will still pay the fees on the sold item. Any time from exactly 4 days after the item has sold, you can open a dispute. If you go to your item in All Selling, and click the dropdown on the right, select the report an issue option. On the next screen will be the option to select that you sold an item and the buyer hasn't paid. Click that and then follow the prompts.
Any time from exactly 4 days later (to the second), you go back and close the case if they buyer hasn't paid. From memory, there is an option in the dropdown at the right of your item in the sold section to close case. If not enough time has elapsed, it will show you how long you have left to wait. If the buyer pays, the dispute automatically closes and you post the item off as normal.
Once you close the dispute, the buyer gets a strike on their account. You can't see it, but if they get 2 or more in a rolling 12 months, they are blocked from anyone who has the above buyer requirements set up. Neither party can leave feedback either, so a buyer can't then get the shots with you and give you bad feedback.
Any bad buyers you can add to your blocked buyer list to prevent them from trying to buy in the future and stuffing you around again. https://offer.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BidderBlockLogin
