Silver bullion coins and GST

I was just looking into how to sell on Ebay so I could start selling my silver coins. I then noticed that here in Australia, Ebay automatically adds 10% GST to each order.

This is a problem because there is no GST due on bullion in Australia. Does anyone know how to make sure the listings do not add GST for bullion?

Re: Silver bullion coins and GST

No, it isn't.

GST is added to any imports.

GST is added to eBay fees only.

I'm wondering if it automatically does NOT apply GST in that category?

The only way to tell might be to list an item and then use another browser to go through the checkout process up to the point of purchase and see if GST is there or not.

Please be aware that as a new buyer, you are going to be a magnet for scammers, especially if your items have any decent value to them.  Highly suggest you go through the sellers guide and be really be on the alert for anything that does not feel right. Check out buyer feedback too.

Are you going to make your items auction or Buy It Now? If you use auctions, please make sure you start at the MINIMUM price you want (never 99c). With BIN items, you can ensure that they are marked as Immediate Payment so you don't go chasing buyers.

Good luck and please come to the forums first with any questions, we have a wealth of knowledge here.

Re: Silver bullion coins and GST

I second that, GST is only added to ebay fees and not the actual coin you are selling.

Re: Silver bullion coins and GST

Wow thanks. Yeah I've bought through Ebay for many, many years but have never sold anything. I'm not sure how a scammer would succeed if I NEVER shipped an item until I had verified cash in my account. I'm going to have to figure out how to post silver coins and what to do about insurance etc. Also, which forums are you recommending for new sellers?

If you refuse to send your items until the money is in your bank account, your selling career on eBay will be very short-lived. Under Managed payments you have to send the items when eBay tells you that they've received the money on your behalf.

you might need to read up on bank chargebacks to see how you can still get scammed even if the funds land in your account.

While you are at it, check out what items are excluded from Aust Post insurance.

https://auspost.com.au/receiving/delayed-lost-or-damaged-items/compensation

Extra Cover payment or compensation is not available for loss or damage to any items you’ve sent with us:

  • where there is no proof of lodgement (for example, a postage or lodgement receipt or the tracking sticker found on certain prepaid satchels and envelopes);
  • which contain bank notes, bullion, or similar items;
  • which contain any items or dangerous goods that are prohibited from carriage either by Australia Post or by the postal service of the country you mail an international item to;
  • which were not adequately packed and packaged; or
  • where damage was not caused or contributed to by Australia Post.

forgot to mention:

  • which contain bank notes, bullion, or similar items;

“or similar items” is legal speech for “we don’t like to pay out on insurance”

I have yet to find a business or insurance company that does.
