Had an auction running that ended on the weekend.
It was for a rather large car part.
I had the auction set as a pick up only but did write in the item description "pick up preferred or buyer can arrange a courier"
The item sold to someone in another state.
I messaged them saying
"Will you be picking this item up, or, as per auction description, will you be arranging a courier to collect? If you are going to use a courier, let me know and i will box it up and send you the box measurements and weight so you can get courier quotes".
I get no reply until last night when my phone rings.
The guy had pulled my details from ebay.
First he says "If i post you a box, can you just send it to me via Aust Post. I'll pay you an extra $20."
I reply that I have a box but it is to big to go via Australia post.
I remind him of the auction description and said he will need to organise a courier.
He then tells me that he only meant to bid $80.00 on the item but accidently typed in $800.00 and as he's on a pension he really cant afford to buy it.
I say, "But when you placed your bid the bidding was already past $80.00."
He says "Ohh, im sorry. I just cant buy it".
I say "Ok, but you really shouldnt bid on things if you have no intention of paying" and i hang up.
Now ive done a 2nd chance offer to the person who didnt get it but i dont know what to do about the original guy.
He came across as a complete twit and i want to give him a non paying strike.
But, i worry that one the non paying ebay email gets sent to him, im gonna get more phone calls from him.
What would you do in this situation?

You should NOT have done that until you'd opened & closed the non payer dispute.
What would happen if your non payer suddenly decided he had the money & paid you PLUS the person you sent the 2nd chance offer to paid at same time???

To do the mutual cancellation to the right of the item in your sold list resolve a problem.
Click on that and then pick the mutual cancellation option.
You need to send a message to the buyer first telling him you will send this and will he agree to it to release him from the sale.
Once he replies saying yes then send the mutual cancellation.
This will still enable them to leave feedback BUT if they leave a neg then call ebay and it will be removed as they agreed to cancel.
Send an invoice with $500 postage so if you do open the non payer dispute and they do pay by paypal that would well and truly cover the cost of freight and do everything you can for proof of shipment and delivery so if they ever did put in a claim for not received or a chargeback you have all the proof you need to have paypal protection.
There is a lot of what ifs here and it is best deal with then IF they arise as there is many options you can do and how to deal with them.

Thanks Kazumi, that is what I meant. Close immediately when the option comes up saying you can do so. You'll see a note on the dispute telling you it can be closed now.
I would not offer a mutual cancellation but thats just my view.

Hopefully he will be happy with that and send you an agreement promptly so he's off the hook. If he doesnt then you can change it to a dispute as long as he doesnt reject the offer.

He did come across as a twit on the phone but he also came across as an annoying twit. I can just forsee that if i do the strike, im going to get more annoying calls

But what do you do if BOTH now want to pay? The original buyer and your second chance buyer? Someone is going to be annoyed...

Thats why you dont put out any second chance offers until the first transaction is finalised. If you're worried about losing the other buyer you email them and let them know that the item may be available as it appears the first winner will default.

You can avoid this to some extent if you say pick up only or you will arrange a courier and charge the buyer accordingly, you should do that anyway as you have Paypal seller protection if they arrange the courier as it still counts as pick up.
If you list it my way and they want it delivered you just add the maximum possible freight charge to the invoice and either they pay up within 4 days or you open a dispute. There is no way they can just pay the item price and avoid an unpaid item strike.
I would not offer mutual cancellation either, I would not trust them to do the right thing all of a sudden, if they refuse the request you are stuck with the FVF and they can leave you a neg. I would give them the unpaid item strike they deserve.
