please let me know your thoughts, this is like a gst tax on second hand items, and I think Gumtree looks fantastic from my experience.

The ebay Final Value Fee (FVF) is 9.9% for casual sellers. A bit less if you are a store holder.
That percentage also applies to any postage/shipping you charge the buyer if you mail/send the item.

All items in most categories (exception being real estate and motors) attract a 9.9% FVF charged on both the sale price and postage amount the buyer pays, so it's not an item-specific thing, but an eBay thing. (Edit, and as clarry notes, this can be reduced with a store subscription).
It is, IMHO, a bit over the top. I understand the argument about what it costs to sell elsehwere, the traffic you get on eBay etc etc etc, but none of those things actually justify eBay's charges, they just sometimes make them easier to swallow.
For some, anyways.

no it is a fee for a service provided. If you were a registered business paying / collecting GST you would also have to pay / collect the gst on the guitar each and every time it was sold, 2nd hand or not.

I agree,
this is a program that automates transactions via servers, then progressively whittles your money away via fees and charges not relative to the item you sold. If this is a fee for genuine work, why can Gumtree offer the service for almost nothing in comparison???

Because Gumtree is owned by eBay and they make up the fees by hitting eBay sellers. Our fees cover both sites.
