concept of paying to promote your listing

Hi guys – what do you think about the concept of ‘promoting your listing’?  That is paying a percentage of FVF for extra promotion.

I’ve only recently been invited to do this.  Is this something new?  Or just something I’ve recently ‘qualified’ for?  [I’ve only been selling for a few months.]

I signed up for a couple of items as an experiment, but it strikes me as one of those things where it’s nearly impossible to establish whether the promotion attracted the offer or not.  Bit like exclusive agreements with a real estate agent (per Australia).  And there is this ‘tailing’ issue ie regardless of when the person buys, if they first ‘looked’ during the promotional activity then the fee must be paid.

Is that how you, learned friends, perceive it all?

So then I made a note of what the current number of LOOKS and WATCHES were, so as I had a marker on the activity of the promotion.  48 hours later, on all of them bar one, is NIL

Cutting & pasting direct from this messageboard never works for me either.

Copy-paste into word document-copy from word doc-paste here seems to work though.

But it's a rigmarole, for sure.

??              No problem here.   Is this the post?

I still sell a lot of non fiction books. I find the ones that sell best for me are the obscure, rare titles that are long out of print. This doesnt have to mean expensive rare though.

I have had success with selling family histories. Some obscure family whos uncle Joe did all of the research in 1975 and produced a quality little paper back book for the centenery family reunion after emigrating to Australia or local histories of tiny little places I have never heard of.. You can buy them for a dollar or two at a garage sale and sell them every day of the week for $20.

I recently purchased a dozen new old stock craft books on an obscure subject ( something like making leather handbags ) from an op shop for $1 each and listed them for $9.95 with international postage. They are selling very well with around half going overseas. I also purchasede around 30 new old stock, long out of print books on training sheep dogs awhile ago. They where just little, cheaply printed paper backs of around 30 pages, but they where written by a well known yard dog trailer around 20 years ago. The box of 30 books cost me $10. Again I listed them at $9.95 and they marched out the door, being one of my best and fastest sellers.

So rare and unusual doesnt have to mean expensive. Its just stuff you cant find anywhere else. I have included a photo of one of the dog books that I kept for my own library ( with mark on cover ) to give an idea of the cheap obscure stuff I,m talking about

You don't get charged the fee if someone purchases through normal means, (i.e. finding your listings any other way than through promoted listings), and they have to buy it within 30 days of clicking on the promoted listing for the fee to apply (it used to be 3 months), so that's a fairly distinctive way for any seller to determine if the promoted listings are working. If you never pay anything for them, no one is finding you through them, or buying afterwards if they did.

As much as I dislike the idea of promoted listings myself, and can't see myself ever using them, I do have to give eBay credit for how they designed them - many other sites, and google, do pay per click advertising, which leaves you open to competitors spending your entire budget just by clicking on your listings several times a day.

I'm not a store-owner.  I don't appear to have that option.  And I don't actually want to remove from sale, just delete the promotion part.

I couldn't seem to find instructions for ending a campaign through general search on eBay AU, but this is on eBay US:

Deleting a campaign

Only a campaign that has ended can be deleted. If your campaign is active or paused you may not be able to delete the campaign.

In order to end a campaign, click "Actions" next to the campaign you wish to end and choose "End" from the dropdown.

Note: It may take a couple of minutes for the campaign to end. Once the status of the campaign(s) changes to "Ending," check the box next the campaign(s) you wish to delete and click "Delete."

Edits to active campaigns generally take effect the same day. Edits to non-active campaigns take effect when you resume the campaign.

However, this applies only to campaigns that were set up through the original feature - the new way, where it's on individual listings, is called "Promoted Listings Lite", and on that info page, I found this:

How do I cancel or opt my listing out of a promotion?
For now, the only way to cancel or opt-out is by canceling your listing and relisting your item.

Seems like a pretty important thing to mention to members (on page) before they activate a campaign. Smiley Surprised Smiley Frustrated

If you read the fine print it says that they only promote listings that sell anyway. If they're already selling I can't see the point of paying extra just to sell them a bit faster.

There are two ways to look at the extra fee - as a bribe (pay extra to actually get seen) or as a 'listing fee' that you don't actually pay unless it sells. No, it's not a listing fee but that's an alternative way to look at it so it doesn't hurt so much.

Does anyone know whether it's only paid on the item price or on the postage as well? I did a lot of reading on it but it was a while ago and I can't remember whether it spelt that our or not.

I use promoted listings & it works quite well.  It doubles your exposure for that item as you have your own listing for your item then the sponsered listing & you only pay the extra fee if the buyer chooses the sponsered listing which is not that often.  I started using it in November & sales have been good every month since then.  I have only been using it on my store ID & only costs a few $'s each month (i.e.) less than 1% of sales

It appears my previous post was referring to promoted listings only available to store holders

Promoted Listings Lite is specifically for those using the quick listing tool so the promotions previously available to stores are probably the same that's available to non-stores now so non-stores should be able to end promotions the same as stores can.

This is what it says under Lite.  Note the bits I've highlighted.

Only listings created or revised through the quick listing tool are eligible for Promoted Listings Lite. You must ensure your listing:

Is in fixed-price format. Listings that are Auction only or Auction with Buy It Now pricing are not eligible for Promoted Listings Lite
Has applied our recommended price guidance
Is listed under any category except Motors, Real Estate, or Travel
Includes at least 2 pictures
Does not have item condition listed as "Parts not working"
Does not have shipping listed as "Local Pick-up"
This service is also not available to below standard sellers.

This is a link to the relevant page for the normal promotions:  https://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/grow-your-business/promoted-listings#content-6

Try holding down the shift key when you paste-it removes formatting and posts the raw text.
