My 3 year old great grandaughter has a best friend at pre school who literally looks like the proverbial "Gollywog"  I am told that my friend is just a darker person than she is.  I am in the process of making a black doll for her for Xmas.  Am I doing wrong?

As long as it doesn't have big round white eyes and big red lips,  I'm thinking just a doll made with black (or brown) fabric is ok and she'll love it.

Re: offensive

There is a difference between the ' gollywog ' and black dolls - which are available in most stores in the US.

Barbie - celebrating her 40th.

As is - go to any makeup counter - the first time I ever saw liquid foundation for all tones of ' black ' was fascinating.

Re: offensive

Barbie is one thing, but Daydreams is talking about making a black doll - from cloth.

I was thinking somewhere along these lines -

Amazon.com: black rag dolls for girls

But I certainly think black material is a no-no - just brown IMO

Re: offensive

I totally agree - there is a vast difference between - the old gollywog - and those produced today.

Having been through many stores in the US - there is a great variety - similar to your pic - not only brown but yellow - red - and of course white.

Never seen BLACK.

Re: offensive

If I was the OP, I would find that gif offensive.

Luckily I live in the real world.

Re: offensive

Actually even the word "black" is avoided for dolls these days. They are often called AA (for example by Mattel), which means "African American". A bit silly in my opinion... If anything, maybe only one A (African)?
