Hi, I have sold a cot. Had said for pickup only and listed my location. This person happened to buy it from another state and paid me via payapl (with no postage of course) I contacted them and said did they realise that they are in another state. They responded with 'can you post' and I have not head another thing. How someone can pay money for something and then not be the chasing up the item, beats me. I want to cancel this transaction (as this was sold a couple of weeks ago) Do I refund and then cancel, is that the way to go? Thanks. btw i did contact ebay, but they responded talking about if they had not paid for the item (great help)

Normally you refund the payment then proceed to send a cancellation but if your your buyer doesn't agree (rejects it) you will be stuck paying the fees on the sale. The only hope is that your buyer doesn't respond to the cancellation then after 7 days it will automatically close and you will get your fees back. Buyer can also still leave feedback.

I think to avoid getting a defect, you have to go back an mark the item as unpaid, then go into PayPal and issue the refund. Of course, before you cancel, check that the buyer is willing to accept the cancellation request because if they don't, you lose your FVF's. If they're not willing to accept, then I have no idea!!! Maybe refund minus the fees you will lose?

Perhaps you could send an invoice with a freight cost (a large one) to the buyer and see if they respond. To do that you go to the sold notification sent to you by eBay and click on the "send invoice to buyer" link.
Did you ring eBay or email them? Talking to a live person is sometimes more helpfuld than what is commonly found to be unhelpful computerised responses. Click on Customer Support at the top right hand corner of the page and click on Contact eBay.

If the buyer is willing to pay separately for postage, I believe that part of the payment, at least, is not covered by Paypal. Otherwise I would be refunding and negotiating a total price including postage.
It would probably need to go by courier, so you would need to pack it, wait for the courier to turn up, hope the buyer is at home when the courier turns up....
I would be telling the buyer that you only offer pickup and cannot post. Get them to agree that it is impractical, refund and send a mutual cancellation. If they have agreed through eBay messages, you have a fair chance of getting your fees refunded even if they refuse the cancellation.

Neither payment would be covered as the original transaction would still be classed as pick up for which there is no buyer or seller protection.
I should imagine freight would not be cheap so get a quote and tell the buer how much it wil be and tell them you will be happy to refund if they want and agree to a mutual cancellation.
If you sell something pick up again it is a good idea to put Pick Up Only from XXXX(suburb) in the title

I would do nothing from now on, you have done what you can. if they haven't responded to your emails - so be it. block them right away. when the 6 weeks is up for them to open a paypal dispute. keep there money in payment for wasting your time. then relist the item.

There are legal requirements around keeping another person's payment, so I would be hesitant in suggesting the OP break the law.
