You'll find all the info in here.  Basically, ebay will add gst onto anything you buy from overseas and send the gst to the govt, so you don't have to do anything.

I really like this change. As an Australian Ebay Seller we already have a 10% disadvantage (ie GST on sale) and it also costs us up to 3 times more to post to the house next door than it does to airmail an item from China. That puts as significantly behind the starting line when compared to overseas business (although admittedly we dont compete much against them).

We welcome this change - hopefully it will lead to an uptick of sales.

AMAZON  reportedly to stop shipping to Australia from 1/7/18.  How many other small business and personal sellers will follow suit.

I can understand why Amazon might not want to collect and remit the GST.....too much trouble for them but why would small businesses and private sellers follow them.

It does not cost the sellers anything.....the GST is collected from the buyers.   Most overseas sellers will not have a clue about the GST being collected in Australia.

For ebay sellers the buyer will have paid the GST even before the seller gets their money and posts the goods.

Australians have been free to buy goods from the United States via Amazon.com for years.

However, from July 1, local customers will only be able to purchase goods from Amazon's Australian website, which was launched last year.

The company says it will no longer ship to Australian addresses starting from the new financial year, and will redirect all Australian customers trying to reach the US website back to the local one.

The local one, of course, has the same range of products as the parent one.

Yes Stawks, I have acknowleged that Amazon is pulling the plug on Aussie buyers....my comment was in reply to the remarks about other small businesses and private sellers also refusing to sell to Australia.

Either AP will have to step up and collect the GST on these parcels or they will slip through the net as the ATO cannot force overseas businesses to collect and remit the GST.

Hi Lyndal,  that is how it will work via ebay, but not for direct purchasing from online stores etc.  From what I can gather sellers wishing to ship to Australia are required to be registered for collecting GST with the ATO  (In your Dreams Slow Mo).  The only other way that the GST could be collected  is via customs, the same as it is now for shipments over $1000.00   That is shipments are held while the importer is contacted and advised to pay, before shipments will be released.  Dont know how customs will know if GST has allready been paid or not.  Time will tell, but I can see many international stores simply blocking Australian Buyers, to save any hassles.   After all, this tax change is purely designed to stop Us from buying from overseas.

By the way, it will now be interesting to see how ebay proceeds, given there initial response was to threaten doing exactly what AMAZON has now done.

Has anyone clarified how this works with second hand goods purchased from an individual overseas who is just selling off a few bits and pieces but is not a business?

At this stage, it looks a shambles in the making.
