GST for Australia rip off

GST charges for Australia ought to be 10% upon purchase price. But recently have noticed the final invoice coming up with something like 20% purchase price and labelled "import duty" i.e GST. Isn't this illegal on ebay's part?

Re: GST for Australia rip off

As has been stated on just about every single one of the numerous threads about this, eBay collect the GST, it is paid to a dedicated Paypal account and then it is forwarded to the AUSTRALIAN TAXATION OFFICE in accordance with AUSTRALIAN LAW.

Re: GST for Australia rip off

The funds collected as GST are distributed so that ❝each of Australia’s States has the same fiscal capacity, under average policies, to provide general government infrastructure and services.❞

The states can spend some of the funds it receives in whatever way the state government deems necessary, while other funds received from the Commonwealth are specifically earmarked for certain purposes. Obviously this means there'll be money poured into infrastructure, health, education, policing and crime prevention, roads, and so on.

I know it can be annoying to see the GST percentage of your purchases being carted off to some invisible metaphorical counting house, but if you think of the services and resources available to Australians as being funded in part through GST, I hope you will see that there's a clear link there. Australia's services don't always work perfectly, and there are some examples of dreadful failures in the systems in some areas, but by and large we have amazing resources available to us - much better than in many many other parts of the world.

And... while corruption can and does exist in government and business (as we've seen only too clearly in this entire 2018!), it's still not as egregious as in certain other countries. That too is something we've seen happen this year - Royal Commissions, enquiries, sackings of council members, public embarrassment for corporations, and regulatory bodies getting some tough bites into tough hides.

Re "if it's the seller they are not forwarding it on to the aus govt", as davewil has said it is not the sellers on eBay who collect the GST. At least that should be a bit of a comfort ot you to know that eBay¹ (or if you purchase items being sent via the GSP, then Pitney Bowes² rather than eBay) collect the GST and remit it to the ATO.

¹  eBay collects it because EDPs (Electronic Distribution Platforms) are treated as the supplier (rather than the individual sellers selling on the EDP) under the new legislation.

²  Pitney Bowes collects the GST when the low-value goods are being sent to them (providing the use of an address outside Australia to which goods are delivered), and PB as the re-deliverer then delivers the goods to the Australian address. In such cases, the re-deliverer is responsible for collecting and remitting the GST to the ATO under the new legislation.

Do some searching on these boards and you'll see many threads discussing this, as davewil has suggested.

Surely you are not suggesting that ebay is not forwarding the GST to the ATO?

Do you ask every retail store if they are complying with their tax obligations?  Do you quizz your electricity suplier, your gas supplier?

They would be the ones to ask.

eBay would be under a much greater level of scrutiny than almost any Australian company, especially when the law is recent.

Hi Lyndal I guess we can only hope and pray that eBay are paying it forward to the ato.  Who would know if there’s a bit of corruption going on and they are going halves with some ato hobnob lol.

I can see loads of buyers and sellers are so frustrated with yet another fee.

Sellers in Australia aren't subject to it. Sellers overseas won't even know about it.

Where on earth is all this “GST” going anyway??? And what are we getting for it’s in return???? Better roads??? More hospitals??? Less immigration???
It’s all going to the greedy pigs in parliament and we are getting nothing. Australia is the scam Not just qld.
When I buy something from overseas sellers my checkout shows huge gst fees. Who’s reaping that? The seller or eBay the Mongrels? I’m sure if it’s the seller they are not forwarding it on to the aus govt

Yes bimonty28, totally agree with most of what you say there. The person that brought in GST was the same person that said he wouldn't bring in GST. He is known as "Mr. Truth Overboard" in many circles. He also gave tax breaks for the mega wealthy and privatised revenue generating public assets. Strange that nothing is said about banking executives in Australia getting mega payouts. Some got 50 Million dollar $$,$$$,$$$ golden hand shakes.

Now we know where our bank fees go and who's lifestyles we have to fund.

You ask where GST is going? I ask that too and also ask where it is taking us?

Re: GST for Australia rip off

All banks got strikes from their shareholders this year for their executive pay, so the owners of the companies (ie the ones with the power and the RIGHT to change things) certainly said something. Although none of the execs managed $10m, much less $50m.

Sigh, another conspiracy theory blown up by FACTS.
