Item is Photo Scam

Hey, what does a guy have to do to get ebay to stop a photo item scammer? 

This scumbag has defrauded about 30 people, and ebay hasn't and for some reason won't ban them? 

All of their items has this at the end of the descriptions where people don't read

"You are purchasing the picture of the coin. If you are a human, do not purchase this item as it is set for bot accounts buying out all the cheap items listed."

I'm surprised to hear that.

I'm sidetracking a bit ( from this thread)  but I was actually going to mention ( when the time was right) that

eBay has done an awesome job of removing  A LOT of fraudulent listings in this category after the've been reported.

They were all reported , current and completed listings, by using the REPORT button on the listing

I wont be using it,  it comes down to OP not having read the Advert before buying,  not my concern if they cant even do a simple check.    Now if it was a real scam,  than I would use it

The OP also posted on the US forum that the seller did reply:

"Yes, they told me to go "$%$$%" myself and that my money is theirs now and it's my own fault"

Oh wow, if any seller dared reply to me like that, it would be like a red rag to a bull. I'd be onto ebay like a shot to report them and to open a claim for a refund. I'd be talking to an ebay rep too about that ad.

Not that I would have bought in the first place after reading that ad. But I do believe it was a deliberate, clumsy attempt to trick people but at the same time cover himself by claiming he was upfront etc

It is exactly the type of seller ebay does not need, he gives it a bad name. Should be kicked off without a second chance.

The seller would have done better not to reply at all than to send a message like that to anyone.

Wow, I haven't been on these boards for a long time but they sure are harsh.  When did everyone get so mean?  The air of superiority and "if you're scammed it's your fault" attitude.

I've been on ebay for 20 years.  I get several scam emails, texts and phone calls every single week and I'm never taken in by them.

What I'm saying is I don't consider myself particularly gullible but if I was reading those listings I would think I was buying a coin.  It's listed in the coin category, it has a photo and description of the coin.  It's not a case of not reading the whole description because, honestly, I don't even know what the disclaimer sentence means.  I'm guessing I wouldn't be the only one.

And the kicker is the seller is, sigh, described as "one of eBay's most reputable sellers. Consistently delivers outstanding customer service".

People come to these boards because you guys have more experience and expertise.  That's the whole point.  Hey, sometimes people do stupid things but they come here for help not for confirmation that they're stupid.  They call this a community but it's not.  It's just one group of people passing judgment on another.

Of course, you're absolutely right.  Some members on these boards spend considerable time genuinely trying to help resolve problems.  But I read other threads too and some people just want to put the boot in.

In the circumstances discussed in this thread, I find it hard to believe ANYONE could blame the buyer.  It's not a case of buyers doing their due diligence.  A buyer sees a photo of coins, reads a description of coins but is supposed to realise they're buying a photo of a coin and not the coin itself.  It's such a completely absurd scenario, who would believe it?  If the seller really was doing what they claim to be doing, which I don't understand in the first place, why structure the listing with a detailed description then tack on a disclaimer at the end?

As I mentioned too, I think ebay's tendency to describe some borderline dodgy sellers as "reputable" is misleading for buyers.  If I was new to ebay and I see a seller described as "one of eBay's most reputable sellers. Consistently delivers outstanding customer service", I would take that at face value as an endorsement.  I have seen that phrase applied to high volume sellers who have literally hundreds of negatives.

The seller in this case is the embodiment of a seller who is not reputable and does not deliver outstanding customer service so how are buyers supposed to navigate these mixed messages?

The item, a rare coin, was falsely advertised as I learnt later from the seller, that it was an image of a photocopy, even though it matched the description of the coin which I was purchasing. Fortunately the seller refunded the money, stating that it was a scam posting. This shocked me as it was listed with the sellers details, to which I forwarded the money via ebay. The seller advised me that this has been a common and increasing concern and has addressed the issue with ebay.

Looks to me like the 'seller' has been 'had' in the past and is now returning the favour 😲
