Proof of Living in AUS Should Be Compulsory if selling in AUS

Is anyone else sick of having items listed in Aus but the seller is from china. How can this even be a thing ebay lets happen. Can't they send out a prood of residence form online that you have to upload proof you live in australia to be able to list items that are from australia.

It's bad enough that australia costs 10x the shipping cost just to post within australia compared to china but then they can just chuck item from Darwin or NSW on ebay and get away with it when they aren't even in AUS.

Extremely frustrating although almost better these days to buy from china when its cheaper to buy from china and with the way aus post is almost quicker as well.

I really wish ebay would just make it compulsary to upload residence or drivers license info ( with registered name) to match where you say the item is being sent from.

Just very frustrating when so many international sellers can claim to sell from aus.

Not me...I look at the feedback & if I don't like Country of Registration or an alarming # of negs I find another seller.

The few items I have purchased from China based sellers arrived as described & in quick time.

Same here I am afraid, I look where the seller is registered and what the feedback shows

Even *if* eBay Australia could/would do anything about what eBay China allows, I can't see why they would when so many people insist on buying from such sellers and keep on keeping them in business

It is not uncommon for Chinese sellers to have warehouse facilities in Australia so the item location is correct.

Some time ago I wanted to buy a large quantity of an item that was commonly sold by Chinese sellers....the main criteria was that it had to be cheap.   I did not care where it was located or how long it was going to take to arrive.

I finally narrowed the search down to a seller supposedly in Australia but the listing had all the signs of a Chinese seller but I bought anyway.  I paid on Monday afternoon and settled back to wait for it to arrive from China in however many weeks it took.

I had to eat my words when it arrived the next morning by Australia Post.

This kind of requirement wouldn't work because many sellers have inventory that is not located in their country of residence, including genuine Australian sellers (who dropship from various countries).

Proving where the seller lives doesn't prove where the items are stored or dispatched from, and proving where they are located is both infinitely more difficult and / or easier to workaround. (By which I mean, how can you show where stock is, and any way you can think of can easily be falsified, even if eBay required full tracking on all shipments).

If ebay wanted to take a more proactive approach to this issue, without doling out actual consequences themselves to sellers who misrepresent item location (as they seem quite reluctant to do that), the least they could do is make it more apparent where a seller is registered, as has been suggested before. (By which I mean, country of registration being displayed in the seller information box on listings - it wouldn't be difficult, and anyone who buys such items more than a couple of times will begin to see the correlation.

I'm kinda surprised there isn't more pressure from within China to address this issue, though - all the ones who lie about it would surely affect the ones who aren't lying - maybe it just doesn't affect them enough.

Good idea. It would also pay to check where they're registered. As has been mentioned ad nauseam, this can be an indicator.

I totally agree, but am I missing something when I first signed up to be a seller in 2004 I was required to complete proof of identity & residence. Then waited for my acceptance letter with a code to complete the application to become a seller.

What are the requirements now to open a seller account?

An email address, and a payment method (for fees) on file - PayPal or a credit / debit card.

I've never been asked for any form of ID from eBay, though my first selling account was made about 5 years after yours, but I've also never heard of anyone having to supply ID before, either - only to PayPal after the anti-laundering laws came out).

In any case, providing ID electronically won't prove where an item is located and / or shipping from.
