Seller refuses to send item, how will it affect me?

I recently bought about 8 items off a seller and they immidiately sent me a message saying that they refused to send me the items, so I shouldn't bother paying. I obviously told the seller all their obligations and such, but they didn't budge so I contacted eBay. Essentially they told me that if the seller refused to send the items I should leave negative feedback and move on, and if I get an "unpaid item" strike they would remove it because they have the messages between the seller and I recorded.

What I'm unsure about, is that there are 8 items total, and if cases are opened for all 8 items as "unpaid item cases" (they were extremely rude and refused to cancel the transaction, so I wouldn't be surprised) would I have time to contact eBay and notify them of the situation? Or would my account just be suspended for "not paying" for 8 items before I could do anything about it. Moreover, would eBay even listen or do anything about i? I've never had an "unpaid item" strike so I have no idea what the process is. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Thanks.

sprinkle, I used pick ups as an example deliberatelly - as that involves meeting the seller.

But it shouldn't be any different  feeling towards the seller of any item, just because it's so impersonal, pay by PP, don't give the seller a single tought at the time, and expect "something for nothing" just because one was the only bidder.

Somehow it just doesn't make it any more OK than having to go to their house and collect your item.

That is why I wish there were reserves on everything - it would suddenly "free" me to go and bid on countless more items without that uncomfortable feeling.

I mean, even the piddliest things have to be worth more than a cent, or few cents - since you can't actually buy anything anywhere  for those low amounts, and even 5c coin isn't even accepted anywhere (just about)

If the seller opened Unpaid Item Cases, you'd need to report it to ebay immediately .

It's classed as Unpaid item Abuse and against the rules.

Examples of policy violations

Not allowed

A seller who refused to complete the sale opens an unpaid item case.

Re: Seller refuses to send item, how will it affect me?

I have found the majority of items listed at auction have a pretty high starting bid anyway. I don't know what you bid on but I very rarely come across an item that looks like it will end up going for 99c these days. In fact, many times I have had an item on my watch list for me to place a bid on closer to auction end then poof! when I next look at it the item has been pulled by the seller with the "item is no longer available" blanket terminology really meaning seller has got cold feet thinking he/she won't get a high enough end bid.

But it all depends on why the seller is selling. I would be quite happy if you showed up with $1. I'd be happy you got a bargain and if the item didn't sell it would end up in an op shop anyway.

And I think reserve price is the biggest waste of time - what's the difference between reserve price or starting bid? With starting bid you can see what the seller expects, with reserve, he's trying to hide that fact. Why?

Re: Seller refuses to send item, how will it affect me?

A few years ago, on ebay, I sold a single bed inner spring mattress, in good condition, for $1. Lady came round and picked it up. I threw in several good sets of sheets as well, because I didn't have any single beds left in the house then.

So.... I think she got a bargain. But then again, I got rid of the mattress too, without having to put it out on the hard rubbish collection.Smiley Happy

I don't know that everything should have a reserve, but somehow ebay needs to make it clearer when people are listing that there is no reserve. Not sure how-maybe a pop up notice before they list that says Wait!! This category of auction has no reserve. Your starting bid is the price your item might sell for.

I agree, I refuse to bother with auctions that have reserves.

You cant have it both ways, trying to appeal to peoples greed by auctioning an item and placing a reserve on it on this platform I believe to be counterproductive.

Why not just start your auction at the lowest price you can "live" with, anything above that is a bonus. The absence of bidders may indicate your expectations are unreasonable so next time around you can list with a price & wait or add best price offer.  There are many ways to encourage and appeal to buyers base instincts.

 mykryan01,

I applaud you for firstly, getting these items at a fantastic price, and secondly putting negs on that seller when he refused to sell at that price. This is the type of seller we all need to be warned about, and exactly what the ebay system is designed to protect against. Thank you for helping to protect us all.

Re: Seller refuses to send item, how will it affect me?

Out of curiosity, has anyone else here noticed the two feedbacks the seller received from the same buyer for the same item? For the initial listing that the seller renigged on @ 0.01c, & then the same item relisted they sold over a week later @ $15, both times being won/purchased by the same buyer.

Keep in mind that the buyer left the neg after leaving the positive.

I enjoy the irony of it. That the same person that is very unhappy that they weren't able to buy something for 1c, is then delighted that they were able to buy the same thing from the same seller for 150000% more, so much so that they pronounced that the seller is 'great', then immediately negged them all the same.

Good on you, they deserved eight negatives.  The cost of the purchase is totally irrelevant.
