seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

Seller admits to not having item in stock when advertised on eBay. (Another issue addressed elsewhere!)

They have my money via a PayPal payment.

I have asked for refund but seller is asking for Bank Details to return money?

Something sounds fishy to me............I just know this is going to get messy.

I have reversed PayPal payments when necessary or part refunds etc, it is very easy.

Some one please tell me I am not going to get messed around.

Wishful thinking on my behalf.

Re: seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

All has ended well (Which is a change for most issues expressed here).

It was never an issue of not wanting banking details used but the fact I know with my banking when money is transferred it is often held up for approx 2 or 3 days incomming and then to transfer back into PayPal can take another 1 or 2 days the wonders of modern banking.  A refund on a PayPal purchase is immediate and means those funds are available right away.

Because much of my current PayPal balance is held on 21 day hold (a completely different issue) I needed the refund ASAP back into PayPal to have enough available funds to make another purchase.

Never the less a quick call to PayPal and 2 days later the seller has made full refund.

The issues may not all be the sellers fault (other than listing items which they do not have in stock which I am becoming aware appears to be an accepted practise by many sellers and again that is another issue).

I have my money. The sale has been cancelled on eBay. Not sure about sellers rating but I have not left any negative feedback other than a individual message to seller about items listed and not available.

It may well yet be a Merry Christmas

sounds to me as though they are trying to avoid a defect that they will get if they refund your payment in full through paypal. payments are to be returned the same way they are paid. stick to your guns

Re: seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

Is your seller a new seller that has been caught up in the 21 days paypal thing?    New sellers cannot access their paypal money for 21 days.    If so, he might be trying to do the right thing by you by sending you the money from his bank instead.

Also he might be trying to avoid the new stupid automatic defect thing - if a seller refunds the payment in full, he gets an automatic defect and it affects his selling ability.

At the end of the day - what happens?   You get your money back.

Re: seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

I am a new seller also and caught in this 21 day hold yet I have issued part returns for overpayment of postage by reversing a portion of the same payment still on hold. All happend with no issues even got the part refund for PayPal fees so that reason although a resonable assumption does no carry weight on this occaison.

It would also appear this seller is not new to the game.

I would suggest they are the later as some have suggested and that it is to avoid a negative FB.

Unfortunatlely that is not going to happen as at minimum I will have to issue a netural feedback (If I get money returned quickly).

I am thinking I will stick with insisting on a PayPal refund.

Re: seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

The seller's a bloody fool if he refunds via direct debit as he's leaving himself wide open for an INR claim and as he has no evidence to support either sending the item or having already refunded, he could lose twice the amount of the original payment. Not saying the OP would do such a thing, but many people would so why take the risk in the first place? He's going to cop a defect no matter what happens, as the OP has already stated she'll be leaving neutral feedback.

Re: seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

the seller is no doubt trying to avoid a defect, and it will be helpful if you agree to it, as ebay defects for everything, and it doesn't take many defects to get sellers kicked off ebay.. very unlikely there is anything sinister about it. Its the way ebay have set things up, so even honest mistakes get sellers into trouble.

Re: seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

As a seller myslelf I was more than happy to take a neutral stance on this and give some latitutude but the seller still has item listed as 10 available and openly admits he does not have in stock. I have now contacted PayPal and it is in their hands. I did do the right thing in the first instance and if I got money back all would have been good (at worst they would have got a neutral FB from me) but now the gloves are off. I am a seller also and can see how things can go wrong but when they openly admit they have a negative business practise of listing itmes they do not have then what else am I to do?

Thanks for lending a shoulder team.....I think I have been reasonable?

Did you fund your Paypal payment with a credit card? If so the money has to go back to your credit card.

Re: seller wants bank details to refund instead of reversing PayPal payment

I could live with it gonig back to my CC if that was how I paid but on this occaision this was the last of my available funds in PayPal as the remaining funds are all on the 21 day hold fiasco. Hence why I need money returned to my PayPal account ASAP (which is now not going to happen).  I am somewhat running on principal now. Yes I could have taken money direct to my bank account but the whole idea of me paying PayPal fees is to use PayPal as the preferred method for on line transacitons.  As previously said it protects both seller and buyer should there be an issue.

My PayPal is my only discretionary spending outside of my tight household budget (I am but another working class slave).

I have now resided myself to this being another learning curve, hopefully this has been also for the seller (who still has items listed as available when they are not).
