seller wont accept 'or offer'

I made an offer on an item  (which had that advertised next to item) which was declined. So I made another offer which again was declined, when I requested why?, the seller said she only accepts offers on large amounts. I think that is false advertising, she could have said that on the information of the item. Am I wrong? as this was really disappointing to me.

Re: seller wont accept 'or offer'

Some sellers, usually new, think that MAO is for above listing price.

Nevertheless, if you want it and the price is right, just click on Buy It Now.

Re: seller wont accept 'or offer'

There are a few things that, while it can be disappointing not to get what you want, makes the seller's actions etc completely understandable.

It's impossible to give discounts on the price of an item for bulk purchases (in a quantity chosen by the buyer and without emailing back and forth and setting up custom listings), except via the make an offer function, therefore a lot of sellers use it specifically to be able to do so.

That means, on some items around, a seller will reject even 1c below the asking price if you're only offering to buy one item - it's when you're looking to buy 20, 50, 100 etc that they'll start entertaining discounts.

Further to that, seller's are rather restricted in the kind of wording that they're allowed to put in a listing. Even though eBay provides the Best Offer function, many sellers have been unfairly slapped with policy violations just for referring to the offer function - the word "offer" in a description is often just automatically taken as an attempt to sell outside of eBay. This can make situations like yours and the seller's a bit difficult, because it's actually a risk to explain why they've implemented Best Offer in the description.

My understanding of the "make offer" option is so that the buyer and seller can negotiate a discount price for larger quantities or combined purchases. if you are only after one of the items then the listed price is what they are for sale for.

Otherwise why have a buy it now price at all?, it would then just be an auction and you would have to compete with everyone else for the item and wait until the auction ends, hoping you win it for your maximum allowance, without getting sniped at the last minute.

The seller has no obligation to accept any offer, especialy as another buyer can come along and pay the full listed price for the item.

I have sold a few items with the make offer option and I think it is not worth the hassle, especialy when some buyers get upset because you won't let them rip you off by accepting their cheap offer.

Try going into Kmart or Big W and say I'll give you 10 bucks for that $20 dress.

Had this happen to me more than once.

No point in being disappointed because you couldn't strike a deal to your liking, just move on and chalk it up to buyer experience ๐Ÿ˜„

A lot of sellers use the BIN/Best Offer because it helps find the price of an item where there is no recent history of similar items being sold.

As for the question "why have a buy it now price" it is because that is the price you will accept for the item should someone want to buy it immediately ie before you get an idea of the price of the item. i just couldn't be bother dealing with people always asking if I will put a BIN on a listing so i put a high one on and have a lot less questions to answer.

There are many areas on ebay where items only come up once a year or less and BIN/Best Offer has been a godsend to sellers like me selling one off items.

if I put a BIN of $200 and only get offers of around $60.00 then I know what the current market is prepared to pay for the item and I might decide to try selling the item in a few months in the hope there is more money out there and more people wanting the item.

However should all the offers come in around $180 then I would accept the first offer.

I only use BIN/Best Offer for 3 or 5 day listings and it usually works a treat.

Re: seller wont accept 'or offer'

Most sensible sellers will have an acceptable offer set at or about 10-20% off the BIN price. I may make one offer below that just in case the seller is really desperate to sell but would up a second offer to 80% of full price.

Myself I have all my best offers set to auto accept or reject at around the 15% off mark

pj I don't have auto accept or decline because I like to see what a buyer might comment when making an offer so if i have auto decline would I still see any messages from the person making an offer that is declined?

I am not game enough to try the auto decline for that reason.

Re: seller wont accept 'or offer'

I have no idea Bump, I have everything automated that it is possible to automate, as far as I know the buyer doesn't get the option to comment as I have never received a message from anyone who has had an offer declined.

Re: seller wont accept 'or offer'

Bump - if the buyer adds a comment and their offer is below the automatic decline amount then it is still declined automatically.

If the offer is above the automatic decline amount the offer comes through to the seller with the message from the buyer.

This happens even if you have an amount set for it to be automatically accepted and the offer is above that figure.
