Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

OMG, How many threads can I possibly kill ?!! Anyhoo, GP referred us straight to a childhood Psych, didn't even bother with the Paed, good one less bill for us! Managed to get an app for this Thursday !
Also got back onto the OT, we were on the waiting list for Speech and OT last year, saw the speechie then at a review with the school they said because his scores were well within limits for speech he didn't qualify for the learning centre & it wasn't really worth going to the OT etc as it's a long drawn out expensive process and it wouldn't get him any assistance in class anyway!

Different story this year, his PP teacher has asked to follow it throughas even though he may not get the 1 on 1 assistance in class any sort of diagnosis gives her access to materials that are otherwise not available !

So I got onto the OT, she has given us an app for the end of the month, hopefully we are moving forward for once!

(Sorry, turned into a bit of a scroller!)

Hello ๐Ÿ™‚

How is everything going?

It is still running, but nobody has posted on it for a month or so. And before that only a few posts in the last 6 months. :(:(

Everyone seems to be on facebook these days.

I will send you the link again if you want it though. :-x

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

Great minds etc Bella - I was thinking about this thread earlier and wondering how everyone was faring. Kids all back at school after Easter okay etc?

We had a terrible meltdown here last day of term, first one in years, a real reminder and "back down to earth" experience after such a long positive spell. Only to be expected with the huge changes involved in finishing school and starting uni I guess, but I wasn't prepared at all.

Thankfully the next day, after sleeping for nearly 24 hrs he was fine (took me a bit longer to recover!); aside from that incident, uni has been a really great experience for him, luckily a lot of kids from his school are doing similar degrees and all hang out together still. One of the advantages of going to what they fondly call "nerd school" lol!

No matter how well our kids might learn to cope though, the underlying problems are still there and don't miraculously disappear ๐Ÿ˜ž

cheers
Rae

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

wow I havent seen this thread for a long time.

Things are actually doing fantastic for us...it has got to the stage where I feel like a normal parent (whatever that is)

We hit rock bottom a while ago and it was a matter of finding out what else was going on as we knew there had to be something. Graemes pediatrician hit a brick wall, he just didnt have a clue on what to do. He had a feeling we needed medication that he just couldnt give. So we were referred onto a privite pyschiatrist so he could be seen to as quickly as possible.
I made the call and she saw us within a week it turned out Graeme has bipolar. Graeme was put on a different medication and was on it for about a month and there was no change he was still very violent etc.
He was put on something different straight away this Dr wasnt mucking around. Its an expensive medication but for my sons health and peace of mind its worth it.
Finally we found something that works and he is the happiest child now and very much at peace.
Anyone who didnt know Graeme before wouldnt know there is anything wrong unless I told them thats how much things have improved.

Graeme is still going to the ED unit for school but he doesnt have any out bursts or is violent anymore. I have been told he just sits and watches all the kids having behavior issues around him (which is quite funny at times according to his teachers) he says "wow was I like that".
Whilst we are no where near where perfect we are 99% better that we used to be.
I know things are looking up as he has had a perfect record at his regular school the one day each week he was there the last few weeks. I would get a call the first 5 mins he was there. They would say Lisa can you come and pick him up we cant handle him, not anymore

Graeme has been diagnosed with bipolar (to what degree or which one they still dont know as he is very young he is only 9) He also has the diagnoses for mild aspergers. So he has 2 mental illnesses but is being medicated for the bibolar side of things as that seems to be the one causing the most problems at the moment.

I havent had a break down or cried where he is concerned for a month or so now. I feel like a normal parent for the first time in 7 years.

I just thought some of you might like to know how things are going here. :-x

We still have heaps of anxiety issues that seem to be getting worse as he gets older but we are working on those. :-x

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

Rae so good to see you around:-x I was actually thinking about you the other day and all that wonderful information you send me. Many thanks for that.

Sorry DS had a meltdown Rae but glad hes settled down. Changes are so hard for our kids thats for sure. It's good to hear that he is hanging out with some like minded kids though, thats got to help lots.

You are so right that the underlying issues never go away but it is a beautiful thing when they do so well and overcome the odds. Our kids may have some issues but they sure are great kids regardless and I always think they make the world a better place.
