A new study has discovered there are different biological types of autism, with genetics, the immune...

In case your interested in reading a bit of interesting news..

Thank you, it s interesting.
I read a book this week, Cowboy and Wills, this is a youtube link. Amazing story.
One thing that struck me was a little bit about when another parent told the mum that he couldn't see anything wrong with her child....she was defensive but later realised she should have said thank you....because it meant that she was doing all the right things......:-x

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

I have news ๐Ÿ™‚

C will be getting level 3 funding for the rest of his school life. :):):)

After 7 years of banging my head against the wall and asking for hep, my prayers were answered and it's better than I thought it would be.

It's sad that he had to hit such a low to qualify, but I guess it happenned at the right time. The meds are helping huge amounts and this funding will not only help him in the classroom (he will finally be allowed to do PE at school I hope!) but it will also ensure he gets special consideration as to when and how he sits exams.

I nearly cried when they told me today :-D:-D:-D:-D

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

Oh Kiwi that is good news! I am so pleased to hear that you have finally gotten something towards what he needs, it will make a huge difference.

You are not the only one in tears or close to this week - my ds has just had a full neuropsych assessment done on the referral of CYMHS, which was made before he turned 18, sitting there yesterday with him as the psychologist gave us the report and recommendation I had a bit of a weep - I thought that was well behind me; but hearing him describe the strategies he uses to be able to function in day to day situations we take for granted was hard. Fortunately he doesn't find it upsetting - he pointed out to me on the way home that, for example, he just "knows" how a computer functions when he sits down in front of one - whereas I wouldn't have a clue - he sees it as the same thing as himself in social situations.

The psychologist noted on all of his identified areas of difficulty (his scores over a wide range of testing varied from the 99th to the 1st percentile) that these were consistent with the diagnosis of Aspergers/ASD, so there were no real surprises, just that some things are more obvious now compared to his peers, when he was 7 and originally tested he was not as far from the norm as he is now, it is as if other kids kept developing and he didn't, which is I guess why it is classed as a developmental disorder.

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

Great news Kiwi! and Island. :-x
I decided to give the Autism Qld playgroup another chance today and I am so pleased I did. (our high school playgroup is closed for 3 weeks)
The session was great, there was a facilitator to help with the children's activities as well as the co ordinator and the children had a wonderful time. My grandaughter was the only girl in a group of 12 and the other parents said she is the first girl they have encountered.

Re: **AUTISM / ASPERGERS SUPPORT GROUP**

I saw this today and it is worth sharing.:-x

You see that child in the store,

Screaming, yelling, cryingโ€ฆ..

You think itโ€™s for a toy they want

You think it is a temper tantrum

It is from the lights, the noise, the smell and called a meltdown

Things arenโ€™t always what they seem

You hear the child talking incessantly

Always on the same subjectโ€ฆ

They know everything about dinosaurs, actresses, or other weird things.

You think that the parents have shoved the subject down the childโ€™s throat.

It is an OCD most likely associated with autism.

Things arenโ€™t always what they seem

You see the child hitting his mother

Then taking things out on himself

Biting, pinching, pulling their own hair..

You think this child is from a dysfunctional family.

This child just doesnโ€™t know how to express themselves and gets frustrated.

Things arenโ€™t always what they seem

Remember how others view our lifestyles

Understand that they donโ€™t walk in our shoes,

They may never understand

It is our job to teach them thatโ€ฆ.

Things arenโ€™t always what they seem

You just gave me a brilliant idea. It is now printed out and hanging on my fridge door, the first place my husband goes when he gets home..... or first thing every morning. (my 2 cups of coffee a day)
He will read it....I know he will.
