Advice on getting a tooth filled

DD (in her 20s)  went to the dentist for a checkup last week.  The dentist said that she needs to get a tooth filled as there is a chance that it could turn black.     The tooth that he wants to fill  is the cental incisor (front)  which has a small mark in the bottom corner,  This is a result of her falling when she was 12 months old, a baby tooth was pushed back into her  gum.  At the time I thought the tooth had fallen out but approx 3 months later the tooth slowly grew back down.   When she got her 2nd tooth it appeared with a mark in the bottom corner that has slowly faded in time and doens't worry DD.   At this stage DD doesn't have any fillings and this will be her first.

Don't think the dentist is aware of the history of this tooth but I'm worried that filling it unnecessarily will weaken it.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The reason for coming to the boards is for information if others have had similar experiences.   Will be seeking another opinion

before it gets filled.  Thanks for your advice though.

Just go and get a second opinion, if you are not happy with this dentist.

Tulip, I would be making sure that the dentist knows the full history of the tooth, before anything is done to it.

I read that one of the fires was downgraded this morning, hope all is well where you are

Did the dentist take x-rays?

Are there any statistics available on the long term success of root canal treatment?

The dentist didn't take an xray.

Re: Advice on getting a tooth filled

An x-ray of her mouth could give the dentist a better visual of possible decay/disease/damage done to that  tooth.

The dentist might believe that the decayed area is so small that x-rays were not warranted.

if in doubt.... get another dentists opinion.   Good luck!
