Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I think we can also conclude that he was born 1798.

He died in Januaury 1874 aged 75.......since it was early January we can probably say he would not have had his birthday yet.

Do you have a year for his marriage in Scotland......I do think that might be the only way of finding his parents names.

Flashie

That is the problem. according to death certificate and the inscription on his head stone. Cootehill Ireland place of birth.

Army records say Inverness Scotland. His American daughter according to american census said her place of birth Scotland.

Also according to her he married his first wife in Scotland.

I thought that as his father was also served in the army as a captain maybe he was born in ireland but regestered in scotland? maybe..oh if its any help they were Protestant not catholic...

Cootehill is an Ulster stronghold. You'll probably never know where he was born for sure. The Ulster Irish had a deep kinship with Scotland.

According to army records height was 5' 5'' with brown hair and grey eyes, and had a dark complexion..ohhh and i have just made out after all this time  that his papers were signed at Adj Gov's office Dublin on the 9th june 1828...he was then in the 75th foot.

His father was a captain and belonged first to the 63rd and also served in the 74th Irish Regiment. He served under the two Georges and as a Color Sergeant received the colours for his regiment from the hand of her late Majesty Queen Victoria

Got that bit from a letter from the American daughter to William Stewart another son of Alexanders

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Nevynreally....I was thinking along those lines.

If his father was an Army man too he may well have been born in Ireland but to Scottish parents.
