I was polled and voted Labor....am in Adelaide suburb, safe labor seat, under a Liberal government

I live in the long held Liberal seat that has been taken over by Centre Alliance, independent Rebbecka  Sharkie. The Libs have tried very hard to win it back with candidate Georgina Downer ( Alexanda's " little Girl ". ). I understand both federal leaders made visits to the seat and lots of promises of money have been made.

I was polled at least half a dozen times on both the mobile phone and landline. Times ranged from mid morning to several calls around 7.30-8.00 pm. So maybe people need to be in unsafe seats that will have a real impact on the election result in order to be polled. My experience doesn't correlate with the story doing the rounds of social media that the pollsters only target landlines during the day. Pollsters interviewed on the radio after the election also describe that idea as an urban myth

There must be other reasons the polls got it so wrong. I suspect the way the left side of politics stifles free speech and debate by denigrating anyone who does not agree with their views may have had an influence on polls. It may not be the total answer, but it almost certainly played a part.

This phenomena was also observed in America with the Trump election, so it is starting to show up as a bit of a regular pattern. .It may get to the stage where pollsters have to allow a percentage of recalibration to allow for the fact that the Left side of politics has become so aggressive in stifling the discussion and expression of alternate points of view.

I have found that the right, especially the far right do that as well   .... have heard it happen quite a few times

Re: Bye bye Tony, Tony goodbye

Agreed there are extremes on all sides of politics which become very nasty when their views are challenged, but the left has become much more organised and effective at it.

Groups such as Get-Up have taken a level of nasty extremism and made it main stream. The term Political Correctness is common vernacular that is used to describe the stifling of debate by those with " progressive " or left wing political views. I cant think of any specific term that is singularly designed to describe those in the general population with right wing views who try to stifle debate. Sure there are white supremist groups etc. but these are very much on the fringe of society, not everyday people such as those members of Get Up who have brought vilification of those with alternate views into main stream society.

The Libs have tried to start a similar organisation, but I think you would have to say that so far it has been an epic fail. Perhaps thier demographic is too well mannered to get down in the gutter like Get Up does. ( example, denigrating Tony Abbotts surf life saving volunteer work )  Sure the guy is a pillock, but that was pretty disgusting behavior by Get Up !!!

The fact that much of the media including the ABC has been hijacked by the left also feeds into the " Rose coloured glasses " effect. skewing discussion and reporting of the things that really matter to people. If organisations such as the ABC constantly present a certain biased viewpoint, people start to believe it must be so.

Re: Bye bye Tony, Tony goodbye

Try watch Sky sometime    ... eg Allan Jones, Peta Credlin, Paul Murray etc etc   ..... now that's bias at it worst

I agree re GetUp, imo they are bordering on Communism  but imo there are some in far right Libs who arent much better    ..... Matt Canavan ( sp ) springs to mind

IMO Free speech is fast becoming a thing of the past and we are standing back and letting it happen

bty I done quite few online surveys and I was sent a number of polls, so they arent always done by ph

Re: Bye bye Tony, Tony goodbye

As noted in another post, I have tried watching sky. Yes it is incredibly biased and personally I think life is too short to spend it watching Allen Jones..........Smiley Happy

But when I,m at the remote farm that only leaves CSI  and the shopping channels. Lets just say, I get plenty of quiet reading done when I,m out there.

Why should Shorten mention Hazel? Has every wife of every PM that's died been highlighted at press conferences. I remember a few. Sonja McMahon, Zara Holt, Margaret Whitlam etc. I couldn't even tell you the name of Menzies wife.

Menzies wife was Dame Pattie.....a very well respected lady who outlived her husband by many years.  She was also acknowledged by the media when he died.

The ladies you have mentioned were very good partners to their husbands when they were Prime Ministers but in Hazel's case it is doubtful if Bob would have ever been as successful as he was without her behind him.  In his early days Bob was a womaniser and an alcoholic but Hazel stood by him and helped by their friends kept it out of the media to a great extent.....he was called a larrikin, a term that was used to describe him till the day he died.

Australia had a love affair with Bob Hawke but they owe a great debt to Hazel for keeping him on the straight and narrow.  Those of us who watched his rise through the ranks would never have thought that he would make it into Parliament, let alone be a great Prime Minister.

Just to add...I really liked the way Bill Shorten's wife Chloe supported him. Any time he was speaking and she was with him, she always looked up at him with admiration and adoration.

I thought I'd switched over to the racing channel one night before I finally realised it was Peta Credlin.
