Watch these kids try and figure out what they are and how they're used.
Now tell me how old you feel

but
they had every other company building VHS machines, they just got outsold.
I looked both of them really couldnt see much difference, when Beta carked it, I was pleased I chose a VHS
Bought a new Blue Ray dvd player earlier this yr, cant see much difference to a "normal" dvd player ....
i had quite a few vhs machines and had i known beta would go out of fashion so fast i wouldnt have bought one.
i was advised by a work friend that all the tv networks used betamax so it was the better one to buy.
tv networks used betamax for years after they went off the consumer market because until digital took over beta was the best format.
now i have one of the rare hard drive with a burner recorders, pioneer 160gb hdd units, must be at least 13 years old.
i can record stacks of programs and easily burn them onto disc if i want to keep them.
trouble is, stuff all on tv these days worth keeping lol
not sure what i'd buy if the pioneer stops working.

It was a smaller and more compact cassette and loaded immediately
VHS was huge and ugly and you had to wait for it to load before watching it.

>> Vinyl making a comeback...
On YouTube there are quite a number of people showing 45s and LPs playing on quite sophisticated player decks. Here's one complete with carefully set-up lighting:

A lot of the kids are getting right into old vinyl. My son has a turntable that he plugs into his computer. He steals all of my old vinyl and takes samples ( small snippits of sound or short passage of play ) which he then uses in hip hop music that he writes.
Its fascinating to see how it is done. The music is mainly written using numerical code rather than playing an instrument. You cant actually hear the music until it has all been written with all of the instruments assigned to code etc. The code completely covers the computer screen as lines of dots, dashes numerals & spaces etc. When its finished, you just press play and the completed music appears. It is very similar to the way old artists wrote Symphonies really.
There is a sub culture of hip hop and rap artist who perform live to good crowds at pubs in the inner city and internet sites and the sound cloud where recordings are published. One of our sons songs recieved over 3000 hits in a few hours and used sound samples taken from an old childrens record.

I was feeling very ancient the other day, explaining to a 17 year old about the show Countdown. Thankfully she has heard of Molly Meldrum but couldn't believe he had a very good head of dark hair and no hat!!

When I was in Uncle Sam's navy, I supervised three sailors who had the maintenance and cleaning responsibility for a radio equipment compartment up on the island. There was little to do, so we played incessant games of Whist, Spades, and Hearts, all the while listening to one of 3 vinyl albums: "Cheap Thrills" (Big Brother and the Holding Company, featuring the late, great Janis Joplin), "American Woman" (Guess Who), and "Sounds of Silence" (Simon and Garfunkel). We played those so often, that you could almost see through them.
A couple of years ago, I bought a record player which could record from the vinyl onto a CD, so I churned out a number of "golden oldies" from my stash.

i've got a cassette player in my car too, ignored because I listen to the radio generally. There's a Joan Armatrading tape still in there from about 14 years ago which still plays when the tape button is pressed by accident..
