Cigarette tax is a good idea in so many ways

Smoking is just not enjoyable anymore anyway as it is just not socially acceptable.

You can't smoke here, you can't smoke there, what a terrible addiction to have Smiley Very Happy

Everyone should just give up!

SWF: ".....Alcohol for me is society's real demon......"

It might be yours SWF,  but figures show that  the overall social costs of drug abuse, which is  the tangible and intangible cost  of

tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs use, indicate that tobacco use costs society twice as much overall as alcohol  consumption.

Now I will have  a drink, or two,   to overcome my shock at agreeing with DY (I gave up smoking many years ago).

That may be the case monman but I've yet to hear of a case of someone king hitting someone -and killing them- or glassing someone or losing control of their vehicle and causing fatalities because he or she had one cigarettes too many.

I used to donna, but when my sidekick Watson retired and I'd solved my last case, I gave up.

It is healthier than cigarettes I believe. My husband had a cigar every time I had a baby but absolutely despises cigarettes.

So how do you feel about premature deaths caused by tobacco use SWF?

"For intangible costs, except for pain and suffering of road accident victims, only the value
of loss of life (to be precise, the loss of a year’s living) could be estimated. Intangible
alcohol costs were $4.5 billion, tobacco costs $19.5 billion, and illicit costs $1.3 billion. The
predominance of intangible costs attributable to tobacco is a direct result of the high level of
premature mortality caused by smoking."

Both are abused, but tobacco use is twice as detrimental  on society as alcohol.

Mayo Clinic

Cigars: "Some people might believe that cigar smoking is safer than cigarette smoking, but it's not. Even if you don't inhale the smoke, it's not safer to smoke any type of cigar."

Web MD

"But the study shows that pipe and cigar smoking damages lung function in a manner similar to cigarettes and is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease"

A shortened life is a tragedy of course monman but most smokers will still bear the burden ot the added costs and sacrifice something else.
As for the cost to society of alcohol abuse, the Australian Institute Of Criminology puts the cost at 14+ billion in 2010.This includes the cost of the courts and jails as well as the other factors I outlined earlier.
What amazes me is the fact that the states have laws regarding the service of alcohol to intoxicated persons, yet they are very rarely if ever enforced. Most of the idiots that wander the streets looking for a victim have gotten themselves pie-eyed in a pub or nightclub.

If there is a victim with regards to smoking,it's the smoker, not some poor sod walking down the street or driving, minding his own business.
