There's some creative reporting going on somewhere because your article and this one both quote Brian Oliver but say opposite things.

In this one he says only 1% of the deaths in China were otherwise healthy people (those who previously had no health problems.  That's 32 "healthy" people who died in a country with a population of almost 1.4 billion.

In your article he's reported as saying there were more deaths of young people in China than anywhere else.

Queensland teachers say COVID-19 social distancing 'impossible' in crowded classrooms

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-19/coronavirus-school-social-distancing-impossible-queensland/12...

the schools thing seems to be another poorly thought through plan

i get the argument shutting schools would put pressure on a lot of familys to find carers for kids when both perents work

but my idea would have been, if you can take your kids out of school without much trouble, do it.

reduce the pressure as much as possible in the school system.

it may still end up closing schools must happen.

if i was a perent and could remove my kids from school i would.

they are safer with family then out with hundreds of possible infected kids.

The problem with the reporting both in China and Italy is that it quickly got to the stage when they did not have enough respirators to go around.  The medical staff had to choose who will get the ICU bed, and they would give it to the young without underlying health problems, as they had more chance of surviving.  Basically, if you can keep person on ventilator until their lungs heal, they will live.  Of-course, sick people already weak have lower chance of pulling through, but not to the degree the statistics show.  There are news coming from France and other European countries about alarming numbers of young people, in their 20s and younger, in serious condition being admitted to hospitals

Some of that would almost certainly be due to young homelessness. Young people who are homeless regularly suffer respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis from sleeping rough in cold damp environments and also regularly smoke cigarettes or other illegal substances which contribute further to their respiratory illness.

These people are probably at higher risk than many relatively healthy elderly who live in stable accommodation. I,m not a great one to say the government should be doing this or that, but in the case of the homeless they do require government awareness and need to be included in pandemic planning.
