like south australia where you can say bugga that to the no travel warning, go on ya holiday, get 3 warnings about it, then get a fine!

recipe for disaster me thinks

Mixed messages ...some states are serious, others less so...... That's because the virus is not affecting all states equally. Some such as N.S.W. have a much higher proportion of community transmission than South Australia. The Majority of S.A's cases have come from people who have travelled interstate or overseas or had contact with others who have travelled interstate or overseas. We currently have very few cases of community transfer. South Australia was one of the first states to enforce strict border closures and so moved early and hard to stop this avenue of infection.

Some people seem to think this virus is a great opportunity for government to oppress people and restrict their freedoms as much as possible. This communist attitude is patently against Australias traditions of freedom and democracy.  The best scenario is to allow the people and business the maximum amount of freedom while preventing unnecessary infection. South Australia is doing just that. Enforcing measures to prevent the spread of the disease, while also not interfering in peoples lives and freedoms any more than is absolutely necessary.

This philosophy is working exceptionally well. South Australia currently has the highest testing rate per person in Australia and second highest in the world according to the ABC radio yesterday. South Australia's infection rates are also some of the lowest in Australia. The results very clearly speak for themselves. The South Australian government has done an exceptional job of managing the crisis so far.

so we should all just carry on and ignore the pleading for us to 'just stay home?

we dont need any fines or overbearing govt force to be ok

we can just use good old 'luck'

hmmm, i wonder if chameleon had a house next door suddenly filled with 10+ holidayers just ignoring the 'please dont travel' thing mr marshal is relying on would he be welcoming them with open arms?

i rekon he would be bleating like a sick calf!

I live in one of the most popular holiday spots in the state and yes we still have a few holiday makers around this weekend. Am I bleating ??? ( please provide link to post ) Nope aint there. I,ve got more important things in my life to worry about.

The vast majority of the population are doing the right thing without overbearing government. This sensible approach is clearly working so why enforce draconian measures on everyone just because a small handful of people are being idiots ?  A few might want to live in a communist inspired,  police state, but the vast majority of the population would prefer sensible restrictions and voluntary codes rather than thousands of dollars in fines and heavy handed policing..

It is likely that most Australians believe the most important thing in their lives to worry about is containment of this virus and not getting infected. I suspect the vast majority of the population who are doing the right thing may support the so called "draconian" measures, because the "idiots" remain idiots and are a threat to everybody's health. After all, the draconian measures will not affect the vast majority because they will choose to do the right thing over Easter. Yes, those people are sensible, but the idiots cannot be permitted to get away with their selfish idiotic behaviour.

I agree.

And the only way the 'idiots' will learn is a very heavy fine.

And besides, the gov't has to recoup some money somewhere.

So David, the police won't do anything about the no travel thing, but what about the limited numbers gathering law?

Are the local rozzers ignoring that one?

If you're that worried (and I would be too, in your situation)  try calling HQ in Adelaide about it.

Maybe a swift kick up the bum might help.

Coronavirus update

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, China has drawn up new guidelines to reclassify dogs as pets rather than livestock, despite dog meat continuing to be considered a delicacy in the country.

"As far as dogs are concerned, along with the progress of human civilisation and the public concern and love for animal protection, dogs have been specialised to become companion animals, and internationally are not considered to be livestock, and they will not be regulated as livestock in China," the ministry said in a statement.

The decision has come after the COVID-19 crisis has been considered to have stemmed from a pathogen in horseshoe bats, that was then passed on to humans when the animal sold in a wet market in Wuhan, the disease's epicentre.
China plans to reclassify dogs from 'livestock' to 'pets'. ((Reuters/ Tyrone Siu))
China subsequently banned the breeding, trading and consumption of wildlife, and revoked all existing licences.
It also promised to revise legislation to make the ban permanent.

The guidelines, which are only considered to be a draft at this point, have been opened to the public for consultation, and listed 18 traditional livestock species — including cattle, pigs, poultry and camels.

It also added 13 "special" species that would also be exempt from wild-animal trading restrictions, including reindeer, alpaca, pheasants, ostriches and foxes.

However, the Humane Society International, an animal welfare group, has estimated that about 10 million dogs a year were still killed in China for meat, including stolen pets.
The city of Yulin, in the region of Guangxi, holds an annual dog meat festival in June.

A step in the right direction by the sound of it.
Lets hope it is policed as well as implemented.

Fair enough, I have a 90 YO woman living next to me and I would be very concerned if a mob of city numbnuts decided to holiday next to her and put her health at risk.

As a general comment though, people are still missing the most important point. Sure the elderly and those with immune deficiency issues need to self isolate and be very careful not to get exposed to the disease. But at the moment there is no vaccine. We might have one in 12 months or two years time, we might not. These vulnerable people will be imprisoned and isolated from family and friends for many months or even years if we just rely on the hope of a vaccine. The only way the rest of us can protect the elderly and immune vulnerable right now is to manage the spread of the disease in a controlled way to allow herd immunity without smashing our hospital system and IC units.

Why do you think governments kept schools open for so long ( while advising parents to keep kids away from Gramndma & Pa ) ? Sure they told us it was to babysit health workers children, but conveniently at the same time a percentage of the population was almost certainly carrying the illness, spreading it to other kids and starting to build herd immunity. They would also pass it on to young, fit adult parents who could also withstand the effects of the virus. Controlled, carefully managed spread to fit healthy people and gradual herd immunity is the only effective means we currently have to control this virus and that is exactly what our governments are doing..
