Religion being what it is today I would not think anyone would bother fasting, could be wrong?

I agree with you that it should be an individual choice and I also believe it should be respected.

I never got what people meant when they say individual choice??? Where did they get such an idea. When muslim women say it's their choice to wear a burka I wonder why unless they believe God will punish them or men will kill or rape them if they don't. If that's what you meant by choice. No rational person will come to a conclusion on their own to live their life in a sack without outside influence hence you need to ask if that's actually individual choice. .

Bob, it would be a choice to follow certain religion/beliefs.  I personally know of people who converted to Islam by choice.  My ex is one of them.  A friend of mine chose to wear a head scarf later in life.  It was her choice.  You may think it is irrational, to me it makes perfect sense.

Some really good points there Cruizin, but I guess the other side to it is 'cultural' as well as religious and the women get caught in the middle of both.

One interesting flight I was on coming back to Australia was watching several muslim women get on the plane in their headgear, and as soon as we were well away from the country, they pulled them off with relief.  We chatted for quite a while about it.

I didn't say that Jesus rejected the OT, Bob. After all, he used the scrolls in all his teachings - you know the ones? The scrolls of the Prophets that we now call the Old Testament in the Bible. He did say however that he came to FULFIL the writings of the Prophets.

Now Bob, seeing that you started this quoting of scriptures thing - Luke 4 -

Exactly, God's law is eternal everlasting. It's the same God as you say, the same God that committed genocide.  

Jesus criticizes the Jews for not killing their disobedient children according to Old Testament law.  Mark.7:9-13  "Whoever curses father or mother shall die"  (Mark 7:10)

Old Testament God said the act of adultery was punishable by death. Jesus says looking with lust is the same thing and you should gouge your eye out, better a part, than the whole.  The punishment under Jesus is an eternity in Hell.  (Matthew 5:27)

I was brought up as a Catholic and for many years never ate red meat on Good Friday. Looking at it now I had an extremely hypocritical mother. So many rituals and none of the "essence". As a child we always had fish for Friday night dinner. Since puberty however, I became allergic to all seafood, so for a long time it was pancakes on Good Friday for dinner or just chips and scallops.

Nowadays, I don't believe in rituals to show my Faith. We are actually having a BBQ for dinner as we are having my Daughter's 16th Birthday Party. We will be going to an "Atonement" Service at Church and then coming home to a housefull off 16-22yo's (yes there will be supervision whilst we are at Church). It goes against my feelings (for want of a better word) to have her party on Good Friday, but Miss is not a Christian and I won't force my Faith onto her...and this weekend is the only weekend we could do it and there is a longstanding party already on Saturday Night.

With regards to fasting, I am actually going to participate in a fasting in July. It is a health and purification / cleansing fasting, for 40 days. You still eat lots but it is mostly vegetable and grains. It is also a time where we will be doing deep Bible Study and counselling.
