If your hapiness depended on someone else being unhappy would you take it?

Yes.. and I did take it... when I left the kids father... 

he was miserable but it was the only path to my happiness... and no he was not a bad person so the guilt over it all was incredible... 

If I had stayed I probably would have killed myself as I would never have started on the path of good mental health.

people's quest for happiness will often cause others unhappiness along the way.

Everyone has the resources to chose to be happy, its just that sometimes circumstances affect our emotions and our lives.  Happiness is a state of mind in my book, no matter what your circumstances I believe you can chose to be happy. its not easy but its a decision.

Everyone deserves happiness. The state of being happy (and all its connotations) and the ability to learn happiness would make the world a more humane place. I also think happiness begets happiness and vice versa.

But no, it isn't possible for everyone to be happy. Some people are happy in their unhappy state.

I,m not sure I agree. People who are truly happy are still intrinsically happy despite what life throws at them. Yes, they may be grieving a loved one but a truly contented person would still hold the same view of life despite the sadness.
