Such sad news and such a loss to hear that Sir Michael Parkinson passed away last night or today.

What a giant of a man with such a great sense of humour and the ability to get others to talk about themselves in unexpected ways.

He was insightful, thoughtful, incise and precise, able to settle his interviewees into a relaxed and talkative mode… 

I was saddened to hear that he’d died.

Renata Scotto, the great Italian lyric soprano, has died. She was 88.

A highly intelligent and intrinsically musical performer, she sang many of the great lyric roles. She had done incredible successes in Puccini and Verdi roles in particular. Especially I n her youth, the voice was limpid and very beautiful. Even when she retired from singing, her life was still all about the music — as a vocal coach and teacher, as a director…
