Re: Fantastic Fiction

I've been recommending the series by Diana Gabaldon ever since I read th first one "Cross Stitch" more than twenty years ago.  Hard to fit them into a genre - Historical fiction I guess with some romance (but not sappy stuff), drama, adventure and a little time travel thrown in.  All the friends I've passed them on to have become hookedSmiley Very Happy

Re: Fantastic Fiction

PCT ... I put off reading the HP books until my son was about 10? I got the first one, absolutely loved it, read the rest available and was left craving the new stories to come out. We didn't quite go the route of getting up to buy them at midnight, but the last few, we bought the day after.

LOL, a confession ... Harry Potter books are the only series that I have finished reading, and then wanted to immediately read them again.

DEB, when I wrote my will (and I need to write another one), I demanded that the executor keep ALL my books for my son, so he could come to know me through them. As he's now 17, I don't think I need that in there any more.

I just had a look on eBay for them, Amber. What would you recommend I start with?

Re: Fantastic Fiction

The first book is Cross Stitch - or Outlander in USA

Second is Dragonfly in Amber, then Voyager, Drums of Autumn, A Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, An Echo in the Bone then the latest one Written in My Own Heart's Blood.

There are several other novellas and books about one of the secondary characters from the books that are also great.

If you ever want a good, comprehensive list of books by an author, there is a uk website with the same name as the name of this thread which is excellent

Re: Fantastic Fiction

I don't read as much as I used to but I have read a couple recently that I really liked.  These two are not quite fiction. The last one was A Captains Duty which was made into a movie known as Captain Phillips.  I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would.

Before that was a kind of autobiography by Jennifer Saunders (she of Ab Fab).  It was called Bonkers and it really was.  I had to stop reading it sometimes in public because it really was making me laugh out loud.

Re: Fantastic Fiction

Thank you, Amber ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

I've heard of some of those titles ... not sure if I've read them or not (a bad memory is a wonderful thing for a book reader).

Re: Fantastic Fiction

A bad memory is not always good for a reader Katy.  I forced myself once to clean out all my paperbacks and donate them to the op shop.

The trouble is, I love Marian Keyes books and on a visit to the same op shop some time later I bought one of hers thinking it was a new one.  Once I started reading it I realised I had bought back the same book that I had donated.

Re: Fantastic Fiction

Historical Fiction............Bernard Cornwell

Alternative History..........Harry Turtledove, Harry Harrison, S.M. Stirling

Mysteries..........Dick/Felix Francis,  Stuart Woods, John D. MacDonald

Thrillers.......  Stephen Hunter, CJ. Box

Science Fiction..........H. Beam Piper,  Robert Heinlein,  Robert E. Howard, Barry Sadler's "Casca" books

Lately I've been collecting "Zombie Apocalypse" stories on my Kindle......but I stay away from those presented in numerous parts......they give you the first part free, and clip you for the remaining parts.

Nevertheless, I prefer the feel of a book in my hands........the Kindle is handy for trips or vacations.

Re: Fantastic Fiction

But, Joono ... if your memory was worse, you could have re-read the book and enjoyed it again, afresh ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good to see you here ๐Ÿ™‚

Band ... another Dick/Felix Francis fan here ๐Ÿ™‚ They are so dated now, but did you read the Alistair MacLean books?

I prefer paper books, too. I LOVE the IDEA of a Kindle ... instant access and all that ... but I like books to be books.

Re: Fantastic Fiction

I have an odd memory when it comes to books - I can remember authors and book titles - and first pages!!  I can pick up a book and after reading the first few sentences, know that Ihave read it and know the basics of the plot but I can happily re-read it as I rarely remember the plot details or the ending.

I also like Marion Keyes, J'oono.  She has a new one due out in November - "The Woman who stole my life"
