As a follow up to the beetles thread. As in what is actually in factory made food and food colourings etc.
What did you make at home???
I'll start.
I made bread and butter custard last night .... was soooo delicious!
Haven't had that since teenhood in the 80's, twas the first time i'd ever made it myself.
YUMMMM.

Oops! * corrections
Zucchini chocolate cake. ......It is so moist and stays moist if wrapped in foil/plastic wrap.
batter is enough to make 2 cakes if use 2 x 8' sponge tins
Keep in fridge or freeze one
easy-peasy
6 ozs Butter softened
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 teaspns vanilla essence
1/2 cup of milk
..............................................................
2 cups grated zucchini (the 'larger' grater holes side on hand held grater works great) zucchini skin included btw
2 1/2 cups plain flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons sodium bicarb
1/2 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Beat 1st 5 ingredients for 3 minutes.....I pass it around for everyone that wants to eat cake, to take turns beating LOL!
Mix in grated zucchini
Add rest of ingredients - SIFTED
Pour batter into a 11" x 8" or 9" x 9" greased & paper-lined cake tin or evenly divide batter between 2 deep, round sponge tins @ 8"....2 1/2" deep
Cook in a MODERATE OVEN 180-190 degrees Centigrade (depending on your oven) approx 35 minutes.

Yep good 'old celcius!
So that would be from 356 - 374 degrees Farenheit or 180 - 190 degrees celcius for approx 35 minutes:)

I missed this thread this morning.
Rich beef and stout casserole from the Taste .com.au site. It is unbelievably good.

I'm old school - nearly everything is from scratch.
Breads, cakes, biscuits/cookies etc, etc
Trouble is, the older you get, the harder it gets, the more time needed.
and the family frown on 'store bought'. "Not as good as grandma's" etc
I am now relying on things like rice cooker, slow cooker, bread maker
(but I shape and cook bread in oven, not in the bread maker)
Last night was Minestrone cooked in the rice cooker
& home made bread rolls. No complaints and easy for Grandma : - )

What I love about making this zucchini chocolate cake is that when you have people around you can offer them a slice on a plate and say "Would you like some veggies with your cup of coffee?"......the look on their face/s is wonderful as you explain the zucchini ingredient and delightfully confusing for them at the same time
the cooked cake looks just like a choccie cake should - it does not turn out green!
enjoy!
