Bit of a surprise, eh?
It says in the link that he had vowed to never enter politics again, but some time ago I heard him say that he had left politics too early.
Anyway, he's always been one of my favourite pollies.

I'd have thought that Beattie was one of those politicians that UNITED people from various political backgrounds ...

You do Karen and so does most of the labor posters on here as they all all love and care about "childish gossip and over the fence dramatics" and have no problem at all posting such if it means denigrating Tony Abbott and the Liberals
Labor, when it loses, will be in desperate need of a credible Opposition leader. Kevin Rudd will be finished and Bill Shorten is badly damaged. Chris Bowen isnโt really cutting through and is presiding over financial chaos, albeit little of his own making.
Is Peter Beattie the next Leader of the Opposition if he wins? Is this Labor planning for a darker future?
Des Hardman is just the latest to discover what Kevin Ruddโs support is worth: NOTHING except for a KNIFE in the back in typical RUDD style..
Itโs still early days in the life of Peter Beattieโs bid for federal parliament, but a ReachTEL poll suggests he has taking on a considerable challenge in contesting the marginal LNP seat of Forde.
A snap ReachTEL automated phone poll of Forde, conducted immediately after todayโs big news, suggests Peter Beattie has his work cut out for him in overcoming the 1.6% Liberal National Party margin in the southern Brisbane fringe seat.
The poll has LNP member Bert van Manen leading Beattie by 48.3% to 39.9% on the primary vote, and by 54-46 on two-party preferred. The sample size on the poll is 725.

In essence, Beattie was a major contributor to the deterioration of Queensland state public finances from the late 1990s. Government expenditure growth, especially in social services, increased rapidly during the Premierโs tenure in office, with seemingly little attention paid to the efficiency of such spending. Further, a commitment to maintaining the stateโs position as the lowest-taxing jurisdiction in Australia was eroded.
His successor as Premier, Anna Bligh, effectively just finished the job that Beattie put in place to move Queensland away from the formerly bipartisan trilogy of low taxes, budget surpluses and low debts. A terrible fiscal and economic legacy has been left behind, as a result.
Just look at the record of Queensland Labor:
The number of public sector workers in Queensland rose from 160,000 to over 200,000 under the Labor government. Employment in Queensland Health alone rose by two-thirds in a decade, to over 80,000 in total.
There was a blowout in the amount spent on public servants of 8.7 per cent a year under Labor. 3.5 per cent was attributed to the number of employees and 5.2 per cent to growth of wages. This was far higher public expenditure growth than the national average.

Ha ha ha ... Karen, you're a winner ๐
I have no doubt at the moment that Beatty will win. Just can't see any other outcome.

I'm not sure he will win that seat. Internal polling in Labor shows that they are in trouble in so many electorates & now desperate to parachute anybody into any seat if it means they have a chance to save the furniture.
Internal polling also shows that their campaign is not cutting through. I don't know what they can do but I believe Beatie is a better man than Rudd. A more balanced & sensible person who people warm to. Let's face it, Rudd is poison & we all know it.
The disdain the electorate have for Rudd is well placed imo, he hasn't changed, the hatred for him is still there in the party & the electorate. He's no good for Labor, I am fearful if this man wins, I am fearful for the country & I am fearful for the politic of our country, it could be damaged beyond repair for decades & Labor could destroy itself.
I hope Beatie wins this seat & despatches Rudd out of the Party.
