Protecting children from things adult and improper. Where should the boundaries be?

Protecting children from things adult and improper. Where should the boundaries be?

Today children are exposed to things that 20 years ago were unheard of. As time creeps on we see more and more things that challenge belief. In film and on television, extremely violent imagery is such an accepted and major part of entertainment that some cannot enjoy a film or program unless it is violent.

In what passes for music, the lyrics are more explicit and sexually laden than they ever were. A great deal of the video clips that appear on television would be considered pornography once upon a time. Other forms of music such as some rap have lyrics about killing people, guns and putting down women in the worst possible way.

Something that would be laughed off as impossible years ago, children before they can even walk properly are now exposed to adult entertainers such as drag queens as part of some supposed education or enlightenment program. Some of these drag queens have names of male and female genitalia. Some have names that relate to sexual scents and arousal. Some even have gone as far as doing stripping routines, twerking, teaching twerking, and  other blatant sexually suggestive behaviour. They are even reading childrens stories that are an alternative to the male and female relationships or the birth genders..

Children are playing violent video games which are much more graphic and interactive than what they were in the past. Many are not interested in a video game unless it is violent. They can play for hours and hours on these games, either connected to their own source or a source that is online. Some of the games are so violent that some adults are sickened to the degree that they refuse to even talk about it. Others that do find it almost impossible to comprehend.

* Where should the boundaries be set or where should they have been set?

* What effect is this having on children today?

* How will things be in ten or twenty years time?

Is your concern about gangsta rap important enough to you that you have contacted anyone outside of these boards to complain about it?

OR,

Is your concern just superficial and restricted to postings on these boards?

He can't contact anyone Slr, cos the radio stations haven't played gangsta rap for years.

Even his own links are not recent.

Gangsta rap is dead in the water.

That's interesting Stawka.

Must admit I haven't heard any gangsta rap for quite a long time but I just thought it was the radio stations I listen to not playing it. They do play some rap but it's mainly local acts (like Baker Boy or Abbey Rose) that I think is better classified as hip hop.

It's not really my thing - I'm not attracted to the style or rhythms - but I wouldn't classify it as offensive or damaging to children's sensibilities.

It was quite sad to see indigenous Australian actress Shareena Clanton becoming tearful when recounting her hurt felt when hearning the "N word" used on the set of Neighbours.

At around 2:00 in the below clip She said ..... "By people who thought it OK and appropriate to think such a word is funny because it's used in American rap music."

So it's not only violence that can come about because of violent gangsta rap music, it's ignorance as well. The distorted view of African Americans. Kids are being damaged at various angles it seems.

Unable to sleep the other night I turned on the radio to listen to some soothing music or some banter on a talk back show. And I came across this stuff again. Yes,l still being pumped out. I'm sure that it isn't aimed at the shift worker audience either.

German 'gangsta rap' promotes anti-Semitic and misogynistic attitudes — study

Researchers in Germany say they have found evidence that young fans find performers "authentic" and are likely to adopt chauvinistic and anti-Semitic world views expressed in rap lyrics.

Researchers from the University of Bielefeld in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) unveiled a study on Tuesday examiningyouth susceptibility to anti-Semitic and misogynistic messaging in so-called gangsta rap lyrics. The genre is popular with young Germans.

"The study provides the first empirical evidence that gangsta rap prepares the breeding ground for later entrenched anti-Semitic attitudes," said NRW Anti-Semitism Commissioner Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, who sponsored the study.

"We must not stand by while musicians propagate anti-Semitism and indoctrinate young people with lyrics that glorify violence and are misogynistic," she added.

She says she has no interest in banning the music but hopes progress can be made in convincing musicians, labels and streaming platforms to reflect upon the responsibility they bear in society.

Ex-gang member talks about rap music's influence
By Dawn M. Turner
Nov 05, 2015 at 5:19 PM

Brown said he looks around the community today and sees how the music controls the minds of many of the young men who are gangbanging. He said that in the absence of more positive role models, the singers take up the slack.

I was talking to a woman who's an on-air personality for one of Chicago's most popular urban radio stations recently when she argued that rap music, even the hardcore kind, plays a negligible role in violence. I vehemently disagreed.

We went back and forth for a while until it became clear that neither of us could convince the other. I wanted to explore this topic some more, and I could have interviewed an academic or an industry professional.

But I decided to go right to the source — to former gang member Derek Brown who runs Boxing Out Negativity, an extraordinary after-school boxing program for youth in the North Lawndale neighborhood. It's been around for about six years.

Re: Protecting children from things adult and improper. Where should the boundaries be?

I've been having some trouble sleeping lately as well.

I will sometimes make an omelette... watch an episode of Shakespeare and Hathaway... try not to watch a crime drama or thriller because I know that they stir up the mind rather than rest the mind... or put on a CD of Handel duets or Bach Brandenburg Concerti.

If you must listen to the radio, Classic FM or 3MBS or similar would be better choices.

I just don't listen to radio stations that play music which would irritate me. If you know of children who are getting up in the middle of the night to listen to offensive music, tell their parents; if the parents are sufficiently outraged and can't control the situation by putting parental locks into place and giving their children good guidance and sound rules to follow, then you might get some people on board to aid you in your quest. There's little doubt that if you drum up sufficient numbers and that in those numbers are some very vocal and media-savvy parents, you would see action taken.
