Rainbows

Does anybody know if eb intends making a tool available to alter profile pics to include a rainbow, as facebook has done worldwide? The tool is dedicated to the U.S. amendment to allow same sex marriage that the whole world is meant to embrace, .. apparantly.  Supporters of this amendment can show their support by altering their profile pic to include this rainbow.  Would be great if eb did follow fb on this, it would be another great tool in deciding where to shop, and where not to.

Skyrider, I have not reported any posts of yours on this thread.  I did report one highly offensive post from another poster that was removed, but I think you would have reported that one as well.  I am unable to have posts "thrown out".  Only moderators can do that.  The post of yours that introduce the PC term was posted in the wee small hours of the morning, and I only saw it on my mobile when I got up in the morning.  By the time I logged into my laptop it had been removed.  If I had seen it on my laptop I would have taken a screengrab of it.

You seem to have taken issue with long-term posters and you were the one who ascribed the PC label to them.  I am not surprised the post was removed because it was quite disparaging of members who have helped thousands of others over the years.

@You write that you wanted a Yes/No answer, but that rarely happens on discussion boards, people discuss the topic introduced in the Opening Post.  You yourself wrote:

I tthought this was the place to go for opinions - ""My parcel hasn't arrived, what do I do?"- My seller has cancelled the sale, what am I gunna do? - "Why can't I see my lists?'' All require input from members, this imput is called opinions ... got it? The opinions I am seeking might be different than the ones in your tiny world - One day you might just have an opinion and that would be party time

If readers are looking for the place where this thread went haywire then this might be that place.  You posted inflammatory remarks in that post.

I feel compelled to repeat this one bit of this post -  I am unable to have posts "thrown out"

joeth, you should read my posts on this thread a little more carefully.  We don't get to choose our own nickname, so I doubt that Sir Nuts will take off.  I started using joeth because many members get the first 5 characters of their real ID as their nickname.  I'd be happy with k1ooo, but that is not my call.  I really don't mind any nickname as it is, after all, just a discussion forum tag/name.  It has no bearing on my life outside of here.  If I was to tell you the nickname that my brothers and sisters gave me I am sure that many here would use it!  But, then again, when you come from a large family you need to have a thick skin.  We called my youngest brother Charlie, or Jim, but these bear little resemblance to his real name of Sean.  There's a story behind each of those, as there is behind members here calling me Sir,  Here's a screengrab from the first thread on these boards where I was called Sir Sales:

edit:  surprise!     you will always be stawka to me.

I have dared to come to this forum to ask a rather simple question that required a,"ÿes"or "no" answer. Some would have it that I have asked for their personal buying habits, their sexual preferences, their takes on marketing procedures, if your a fb member, and more, and then seen fit to attempt to howl me down, even scream at me, because of their in-ability to grasp the question that was asked in my original post.

Having just read through this thread today, and quite obviously missing out on some of it (ref: removed posts, I have no idea what they contained so maybe this post will miss the mark), but the impression I got is that some of the negative reaction is not to the question itself, but the notion (by your own admission) that a rainbow filter would influence a purchase decision. I'm not commenting on that, just pointing out that I think that's been overlooked.

More than half of the avis on my FB newsfeed were rainbow-filtered at one point or another, but mine never was - and not because I don't support marriage equality (I actually do, and my buyers would probably be able to tell I do without a rainbow filter on my avatar, since some of my items on my selling ID are pride-themed. Or maybe I don't and I'm just trying to cash in on another corner of the market - who can tell without knowing anything about me at all?).

By which I mean, pictures might say a thousand words, but you can't judge a book by its cover, either, so what the picture says to someone and what the person behind a picture thinks don't necessarily mean the same thing - at the end of the day, nought but a rainbow filter will tell you very little.

The other thing is, eBay might have publicly supported/celebrated the US decision via social media and the like, and take a political stand in some areas, but at the end of the day, I suspect they don't view eBay as a social media site, where sellers are actually individual human beings, and to whom they've provided the forum to promote and discuss their personal opinions via the marketplace (some people do that anyway, of course, via products, descriptions and so forth), but the only place they've really done anything like that is with community spirit discussion board.

The most 'social' tools eBay gives sellers are all focussed on promoting/selling products. I would venture to say that if they thought avatar tools would drive sales, they'd introduce them, but I would also venture to say that the liklihood of avatar tools helping to drive sales is minimal at best.

Re: Rainbows

I will bet my bottom dollar that the % of those in Oz who chose to adopt the rainbow filter that don't support marriage equality or don't care about marriage equality was absolutely blitzed by those who chose to use the filter because they 100% support it.

Why am so sure ?

Facebook simply reflects a segment of the populations actual perspective on stuff - and research demonstrates there is a high level of support in the Oz population for same sex marriage.

I think the focus of this thread has tended to consistently come back to discussion of a very small minority who may chose to demonstrate support for the issue for trading issues alone or try and/or link the rationale for demonstration of support directly to business only.

There are people (and businesses or organisations) that let their ethics and values guide their business practices or guide the purchases they make.

IMO trading has never been free of values and the advent of social media has just served for traders to promote them.

Re: Rainbows

I don't argue with any of that, I was just attempting to address the original question - the answer to which I can only say a (presumptuous) "highly doubtful", with the reasons I expressed above.

Facebook, as a social media site, means communities are formed based on family, friends, and like-minded individuals. People who know each other, or get to know each other, and share experiences, opinions etc  etc on a daily basis. There are sales groups there too, I know, but it is very much peer-to-peer. I can't personally see eBay approaching their sellers the same way FB approaches members, and providing the same kind of communicative tools (quite the opposite, in fact).

Facebook grooves on personal information - including opinion-based info - being shared (even profits from it), eBay fears it.

Re: Rainbows

Sure.

I note that eBay already allow a significant level of freedom in the selling tools provided to allow sellers to brand their products and selling approach in particular ways.  This includes:

In listings - no predetermined listing format or template.

In profile and shop front - via photos, avi and shop narrative.

Traders with particular socially acceptable ethics and values can operate relatively freely on eBay to promote their vision, values, way of doing business and products.

Sometimes doing nothing is more liberating and offers others more freedom than other actions might - such as a suite of dedicated tools.

Doesn't work of course for traders with socially unacceptable habits or products.
