The Death Penalty, as a deterrent

The Death Penalty, as a deterrent.

As there seems to be widely differing views on this subject it may be an idea to discuss it here instead of in the other thread involving real people..

Are you in favour of the Death Penalty or do you oppose it.

If you are in favour , in which circumstances should it be imposed.

If you are not in favour, are there any exceptions to your opposition?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

The Death Penalty, as a deterrent

Poddy, I am torn between support for the death penalty and opposing it.

This is because I believe that certain criminals such as proven serial killers should be executed.

The real dilemma is the idea of the death penalty because mistakes are made can, and sometimes do, lead to innocent people on death row being killed.

The human condition is far too flawed to always get it right, whatever right is, and therein lies the problem.

Frankly, Podds, I think it should be re-introduced into Aus for such ppl  as Ivan Milat,  Anita Cobby's killers, and Jill Maher's rapist and killer.

I would have no qualms about taking a picnic lunch and watching those ppl hanged.

Abortion is the killing of the truly innocent.

Let us assume that, for this debate, that guilt has been proved beyond any shadow of doubt.

One view is this:

Studies Say Death Penalty Deters Crime

By ROBERT TANNER

-- Anti-death penalty forces have gained momentum in the past few years, with a moratorium in Illinois, court disputes over lethal injection in more than a half-dozen states and progress toward outright abolishment in New Jersey.

The steady drumbeat of DNA exonerations _ pointing out flaws in the justice system _ has weighed against capital punishment. The moral opposition is loud, too, echoed in Europe and the rest of the industrialized world, where all but a few countries banned executions years ago.

What gets little notice, however, is a series of academic studies over the last half-dozen years that claim to settle a once hotly debated argument _ whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent to murder. The analyses say yes. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer.

Icy, let's not forget that beautiful school girl Ebony Simpson. The piece of filth that killed her still draws breath.

Well I don't think so, unless it's a case of rape or deformity. At least, if it's legalised, it shouldn't be funded by the health system.

Anyway, better stick to the topic.
