I am part way through reading a fiction book featuring The Shroud, and it has sparked my curiosity.
What do you know?
What do you think?
Me? I want to believe that it is real, but I'm not convinced one way or the other just yet, but I am interested in discussing it with anyone else interested in doing so.
For something of such historical significance to truly exist would be amazing.

It matters from a purely scientific point of view.
Would be interesting if they were allowed to test it again.
Yes, it matters from a scientific point of view.
Something cannot be declared a "miracle" without scientific tests as far as the Catholic Church is concerned.
We know it has to be science, and not faith, that has the last word on this mysterious image," Archbishop Severino Poletto told a news conference at the Vatican. "We can't exclude new tests, in particular on some strands of the cloth where the image is found."

I'm not looking for evidence of any religion.
How would proof as to the authenticity of the cloth verify anything other than a man known to the world as Jesus Christ was wrapped in it in 33AD?
It's an intriguing piece of history.
I'm hoping that it's OK with you that I explore it.

I would have bypassed that book for this one
The Sign: The Shroud of Turin and the Secret of the Resurrection
Thomas de Wesselow
LOL Az - I'll have a look for it - but I wasn't actually looking for a book on the Shroud when I selected it - I like crime novels, I was in that section of the book store, and the blurb on the back sounded promising.

You know what surprises me. If you really want evidence for the existence of Jesus. Jesus apparently performed hundreds of miracles, witnessed by thousands, he claimed to be God, so obviously any authorities would've payed attention to any claim. He taught so many, Yet there's not one single contemporaneous record of him, NOT ONE. Why is there not one document of Jesus' writing if he taught so much? And the Romans's are meticulous at record keeping yet nothing.
I suspect a person called Jesus actually existed. But if you're going to claim he died and then bodily resurrected or walked on water or converted water into wine, a thread of evidence would be nice.

*shrugs*
I'm a newbie with this topic - of course I'd heard about the Shroud, but this is the first time I've taken an interest into what it's really all about.
I just found the references to it in the book I was reading intriguing. I thought I'd like to know more.

GB: "if you have faith in your religion, evidence doesn't matter."
I agree GB, but would add that their is no credible evidence of any deity. One might as well argue that images in a cheese topping, potato crisp, or greasy walls are evidence to support
a desperate need for confirmation.

bob, it's not about evidence for a lot of people, as you said before they have faith already so don't need it.
It's about the scientific how which fascinates a lot of people. The only person that may have been able to create it would have been Da Vinci. He understood things that just about everyone else in his time couldn't have dreamed of. But there is no evidence among his many writings/drawings that he created it.
Which brings us back to, who did? At a time when no one knew what a negative was. It wasn't painted, or woven so how is it there?

Glad you mentioned the "greasy walls", John. Have you had a chance
to find out what caused it as per our last discussion on the topic?
I provided you with the scientific test results. Have you had a chance
to do some research to disprove the findings?
