Trump nominated for 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

United States President Donald Trump has been reportedly nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to broker diplomatic ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump was nominated by Christian Tybrin-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian ParliamentFox News has reported.
"For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees," Tybrin-Gjedde told Fox.

It seems the Finns think more of him than the english-speaking world.

Just a comment about the handling of covid in US.

I write regularly to someone over there and look, we all know the US has the most cases in the world but I think also Trump was misled by the Chinese to some extent & it's a catchy virus. It was in the US by January and when the US government made moves to stop Chinese arriving, there were absolute howls of protest and accusations of racism.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The problem was NOT closing the borders to Chinese, the problem was that singling out Chinese citizens while others could come from China and just walk in.  I also talk to people in the US (most of my relatives are Americans).  US citizens returning from China reported that  on their way to the airport they were stopped on every corner, as they were trying to get bus or taxi to the airport, and their temperature taken.  Then again when they arrived at the airport, and while they were waiting to get on plane.  That was in Bejing, miles from the outbreak.  When they arrived in the US, nobody checked them, nobody asked any questions, nobody asked if the visited Wuhan, nobody gave them any instructions.  And Trump kept calling it the "Chinese virus", which resulted in racist attacks on anybody looking Asian.  That is why it was called out for being racist.

And now that there are the tapes, which show Trump knew that COVID19 was deadly and easily spread on 7th February.

Up until COVID, Trump was actually doing a pretty reasonable job of running the place and certainly no worse than many before him. Unfortunately his handling of COVID has been disastrous. s But is Biden the best the opposition can come up with to take over the Job ????

If Trump pulls of a miracle and wins again it will be pretty easy to see why !..............It would almost be worth it to see the haters writhing in their own bile for another few years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trump inherited steadily growing economy and declining unemployment, over 6 years.  Low interest rates.  All what he had to do was to sit tight and the economy chug on on the same trajectory, and that is pretty much what he did.  The only thing he did was introduce huge tax cuts for the top of the town, which resulted in overstimulating the stock market as the companies were buying back their stocks, while Trump boasted about the "growth".  But he forgets to mention the biggest growth of his presidency is the debt, which has reached ove trillion first time in the history.

Actually the economy started to slow and the quarterly growth, or job creations, have been less than under Obama.  Of course, the total was higher as he was building on the situation he inherited.  But by the end of last year the economic predictions were not very good.  Now Trump can blame it on COVID, which naturally made things lot worse, and it is impossible to tell how bad the economy would get without it.

Trump did not accomplish any of his promises; where is his wall? where is the simple cheaper health care system for all he promised will be announced "right after he is sworn in"?  Actually, that is something that nobody is talking about; many people in America will not go to see a doctor if they have signs of COVID19 because they cannot afford it, and they will go to work because they cannot afford to stay at home and lose their job.  And then there are those who had to be hospitalized and come out with million dollars bill.

Naturally US citizens would be allowed back into their country. We had that exception too. And the issue of no follow up.

At the start, in Feb/March, people here were just told as they arrived to go home & self isolate.  Blind Freddy could see that was a bit ambitious, to assume all people would obey. In fact they didn't. My sister had people from Wuhan area in buying up cars in the same week as they arrived here. No self isolation for them.

I think if we are honest here, completely honest, we're going to have to admit that China took draconian measures to stomp on the virus. They physically walled off a city, they welded some people's doors shut. They had soldiers with weapons and ready to use them.

That would not fly in the US. In fact if you had people near US airports, even just taking temps, there would probably be a lot of citizens who would refuse to be tested.

The reason China took it seriously is they had the outbreak from December, they knew how catchy it was, they underplayed the seriousness to the rest of the world for a while.

And the rest of the world underestimated it too, not just the US. It wasn't till it took off in italy that people started to really take notice.

Sure, all politicians knew it was easily spread, but translating that into immediate action is quite another thing.

And although I call it covid, it is also a 'chinese virus', that's where it started. We call it the Spanish flu (although i don't think it started in Spain). No different.

I suppose the real question is-is covid all that deadly? How many healthy people under 40 has it killed here in Australia? ie people with no underlying medical conditions. What is the average age of males who die, females who die? How many people need respirators, what is their average age? And so on.

What amounts to the 'real question' is a matter of opinion. Narrowing it down to people in Australia who are under 40 and healthy is narrow. Covid-19 has killed 917,000 people worldwide. Many were in third world countries, lived in conditions that do not allow for health and the ages of the dead range from 6 weeks to 103 years. This does not take into consideration the additional data that is unknown, but thought to be very significant.

We do not know the long-term effects, or whether it can remain dormant and invade the vital organs as we age. The global number of infections has risen to 28.6 Million. Australia can't keep it's international borders closed forever. Downplaying the deadliness of the virus based upon one narrow perspective may not be the sensible way to measure the possible impact of this pandemic.

The real question is not 'how deadly is the virus?', but 'how debilitating is the overall effect of the virus?'.

How many who catch the virus will suffer long term side effects?

What effect do the deaths or long time side effects have on the health - mental and physical - of family members?

How many more suicides will there be?

How many will suffer or even die from other diseases if the health system becomes overwhelmed and unable to care for them adequately?

How many more  women will die in domestic violence episodes brought on by the frustrations of joblessness and social isolation?

So what are the highest priorities that the Government should consider? Is it the physical health risk, mental health risk, economic risk, or law and order? Clearly Morrison currently places less importance on the physical health risks and the media are increasing their criticisms of restrictions. Fox are relentlessly in attacking the Premiers. Things are starting to crumble now and hard decisions will need to be made. Which pressures will they give in to?
