Victorians still with faulty Takata airbags face rego suspensions

More than 400 Victorians face having their car registration suspended if they fail to replace their faulty Takata airbags.

The move from the Andrews Government follows multiple attempts from vehicle manufacturers to contact affected owners, including letters, calls, emails and doorknocking.

There have been 29 reported deaths - including one in Australia - and more than 320 injuries worldwide from faulty Takata airbag inflators, which can shoot particles at deadly speeds when deployed in an accident.

More than 3.4 million airbags have been replaced free of charge in 2.8 million cars in Australia as part of compulsory recall efforts going back to 2013, but thousands are believed to still remain on the roads.

In Victoria that number is at least 400, including in certain Honda, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mazda and Lexus models manufactured between 2001 and 2004.

"We don’t want to suspend or cancel anybody’s registration, but we will do whatever is necessary to get these potentially deadly airbags off our roads,” Road Safety Minister Jaala Pulford said.

People with the faulty airbags will receive letters again this week giving them a time frame to have them replaced at no cost by authorised brand dealers.

If the directions are not followed, the registrations for those vehicles will be suspended.

The government has opted to avoid fines because of the socio-economic status of many of those affected.

I don't understand why you wouldn't get them replaced.

It's free.   Unless they don't understand that part.

Seems they've tried everything -

Perhaps their cars also have other maintenance issues which they can't afford, and are worried the car might be put off the road.

They still should get the airbags changed - it's free.

Don't think the peeps doing the replacing are too interested in anything else wrong with the vehicle - they are being paid for the airbag replacements.

More likely to be put off the road if they don't & get caught. ??

They'll be driving unregistered vehicles in Vic if they don't get the airbags done.

When we had ours done, the cheeky varmints tried to tell us we'd booked for a service.

Hells no we didn't.

Could get a V8 into them too.

They did well in our local touring car scene (LHD)

Is your car a rear-wheel-drive?

Signatures suck.

But they don't know that for sure.

Did you ever come across a mechanic who serviced or repaired your vehicle without producing a list of extra stuff they said should also be urgently done?

Yes - mine have never done it.

Possibly because the vehicles have their services - anything wrong - off they go to be checked.

Do understand though - it has it's cost.

A vehicle needs to be safe to be on the road - and reliable.

Finding an honest mechanic is certainly not an easy process.

Any time I've gone to that website to check it always told me the site was too busy or whatever. Is there a year they started using Takata airbags? I haven't had a letter but I wouldn't rely on that.

Just checked and the site worked this time, so thanks for the reminder. Now I can forget all about it.
