Also sorry but I have to disagree, I think there is a great deal of sincerity in the crowds that you describe.

Something like 58,000 Americans were killed in Vietnam, most of them were blacks, poor whites etc. It was shameful and many would have cheered that they were not one of them going.

People waving off the troops for Vietnam would have been family. There to support their loved ones caught up in the lottery.
