Me too iza, but it wasn't just waving off family in WW2 etc, it was patriotic and celebrated.

Most joined in.

Something like 58,000 Americans were killed in Vietnam, most of them were blacks, poor whites etc. It was shameful and many would have cheered that they were not one of them going.

People waving off the troops for Vietnam would have been family. There to support their loved ones caught up in the lottery.
