there used to be a competition on UK radio, where they set a problem and then people dialled in with the answer - anyone who got it right won a big$ prize. ALL the time I was watching / listening I didn't see anyone win it? It may be still on ? It went something like this:

ADD ALL THE NUMBERS

TWELVE TIMES TWO

PLUS SIXTEEN

MINUS SEVEN

At the end of the show they gave out the answer - but I won't tell you yet

did anyone have a go? Can anyone solve it?

ADD ALL THE NUMBERS

12 + 2 + 16 + 7 = 37

TWELVE TIMES TWO

12x37 + 12x37 = 888

PLUS SIXTEEN

 16x888 =14 208

MINUS SEVEN

7x888= 6216

14 208 - 6216 = 7992

Is the answer 7992?

Is the answer 8880?

The cryptic clue sounds plausible, if so.....

I = 1 x 3

V = 5x2

x = 10x1

L =50x4

C =100x0

D= 500x2

M=1000x3

= 4223?

this is the way I did it ... but it's wrong:

TWELVE TIMES TWO

PLUS SIXTEEN

MINUS SEVEN

L = 50

V =  5

LV = 55

I = 1

M = 1,000

IM = 999

L = 50

I = 1

X = 10

IX = 9

M = 1,000

I = 1

MI = 1001

V = 5

TOTAL 4,187 BUT IT WAS WRONG

The answer they gave was ..... 3,134

they didn't say how because they had a similar puzzle each week and the prize was  BIG$.

I tried working backwards from that number but never got it right.

Of course there are much brighter people than me on here so I haven't given up hope that someone will find the solution.
