Strathfield MC is the 'Big Black Hole' for Australia Post. If your item needs to travel through there, it may as well be Mars ! When sending to western NSW, our items go around and around in circles for days before they get spat out on the other side of The Great Dividing Range...
Australia Post will be using front end loaders and dump trucks soon to move the enormous mountains of parcels.
Ummm, no, the 2 worst offenders are Chullora and Sunshine West. It's nothing for parcels to ping pong between them for weeks before getting delivered. As a whole, Strathfield is pretty good most of the time, especially compared to Chullora.
Posted 2 parcels to Victoria recently. Posted on the same day. One went via Strathfield and was delivered quickly. The other is still allegedly at Chullora (according to the last tracking update last Sunday).

Why your Australia Post parcels are making a 1500 kilometre detour

That's nothing compared to my parcel from UK that went to Germany, USA, Honolulu then came to Australia. The good part was it only took a week to arrive. The mail is crazy everywhere at the moment, this is as good as it gets at the moment.

That's my best guess, that they're redirecting bulk lots of mail to be sorted elsewhere

No guess required.
AP have stated that to be the case.

best one I have had so far is a package through the same processing plant 6 times now. Can not believe it been scanned 6 times in the same location.
