Bend over, breath deeply, it doesnt really hurt !!!

         Welcome to my latest defect.

Customer buys a vintage outboard motor part. I send it large letter, never to hear another thing. Four months later I get a Paypal credit card chargeback alledging unauthorised use of card. This seems rather strange as the buyer has a number of outboard motor parts purchases in thier feedback & buying history. I phone them up and "Cindy" answers. She goes on to tell me that she asked a "friend" to help her set up her account including all passwords. She didnt bother to change the passwords as she trusted her friend. Her partner also uses her account ( to buy outboard motor parts ) .

You guessed it, the "friend starts to make unauthorised purchases, using Cindys ebay account. She reports it to the police and then initiates the chargebacks, not bothering to check which where made by Cindy and her partner and which where made by the "friend". While I was on the phone, Cindy asks her partner if he made the purchase, which he confirms. I pass all of this information ( including the fact that Cindy has allowed at least two other people access to her password ) to Paypal. Result -  item was mailed without tracking, so Cindy gets a payment reversal credited to her account and I also have the priveledge of paying a nice big extra fee to the credit card company for handling the chargeback. Reminds me a lot of my last prostate examination. Breath deeply, remember its only a bit of discomfort. It doesnt really hurt now does it, Its all in your mind.:  Smiley Frustrated ( Thats the look I had on my face at the time LOL )

WELCOME TO THE BRAVE NEW WORLD OF 180 DAY RETURNS.

I'm sitting here shaking my head along with the rest of them.

A fat lot of good it does you, but just know at least I offer moral support for what its worth.

This is terrible stuff.

I'd be ringing and demanding that Paypal return my funds or I'd be lodging a complaint with the Ombudsman at https://fos.org.au/ and if that doesn't get your money returned to you, I'll eat my keyboard!
Haha, love to see someone eat a keyboard.

Re: Bend over, breath deeply, it doesnt really hurt !!!

I know what your saying, i just lost a case with pay pal, i never received the alleged broken item back, but paypal see fit to refund the money to the buyer.

The return tracking # the buyer sent paypal is invalid, but that doesn't seem too bother these grubs.

I got cranky over it, i was going to do this and that, but i don't have the head space to fight a loosing battle, so i haven't bothered with it, it was only 2 days ago.Smiley Mad

So would I, but it won't be me doing any keyboard-eating, that's for sure. Smiley LOL

The point is, Paypal have handled the situation very badly indeed, not to mention improperly, and a complaint to the FOS would see Paypal not only compelled to return the OP's funds, but they would also be hit with the usual hefty fee that the FOS charges Paypal every time a complaint is lodged, whether it is upheld or not.

Additionally, Paypal are well aware that they've stuffed up badly on this occasion which is why the verbal threat of involving the Ombudsman would have them bending over backwards to refund the OP's money. If it were me however, I'd be accepting the money and still lodging a complaint with the FOS in order to not only punish them, but to also teach them a lesson they won't be forgetting any time soon.

In fact, anybody else who feels poorly treated by Paypal would be well advised to ring them and threaten to lodge complaints with the FOS, whether they think they'll win or not, because either way, it's going to cost Paypal a shipload of money in Ombudsman's fees regardless.

"I think the fact that I am actively working on "the big escape" helps, as I can see a time when I wont be joined at the hip with ebay in the not so distant future."

I'm so pleased to read this.  A week or so ago on another thread, you didn't see a way out, because of long time habit of selling here.

I can state for a fact, I am so much more relaxed now that my back is turned to eBay. My customer service is as good as it was on eBay, but without any of the stress value that goes hand in hand with being an eBay seller.  If I wasn't so old, I would do the 'oh! what a feeling...' leap!!!

Good luck to you with your future selling somewhere else.

Thank you all for your positive suggestions and moral support. As you may have gathered from the OP I,m pretty relaxed and almost amused by this strange little occurance, as I expect the odd transaction go wrong occasionally. Its all just part of the "fun " of selling on ebay. I try not to take it to heart too much, as it just gets me frustrated and angry if I dwell on these little problems too much.

5Kzam,......... I,ll let you in on my little secret plans for the future. ( dont tell anyone else will you ! ).  I originally come from a farming background and still retain a financial interest in agriculture. I have a reasonable sized farm in semi arid country ( currently leased out ) as well as around 100 acres of high rainfall hills grazing country. Over the last 12 months I have leased another 300 acres of hills grazing, re-negotiated the lease on the semi -arid country to allow grazing of sheep and are looking to purchase or lease another grazing property in around 12 months time.

I have also been breeding and buying up hundreds more sheep with a view to earning a living from full time grazing. I currently have around 700 sheep up from 300 - 400 twelve months ago. ( message to I-love-my sheep, I love mine too ) In a purely platonic sort of way of course LOL. I,m well on the way to reaching my goal of 1000 sheep, which will provide a reasonable living. I,ve got a new little Border Collie sheepdog in training. Have been building sheds, watering systems  & fences, buying hay equipment, repairing older infrastructure etc.

No more internet selling, constant ebay changes and credit card chargebacks. Just the trees, flies and weather to contend with. I will still probably list a few things, just to earn some extra dollars, but dont intend to be tied to the computer 24/7. I find the farm & sheep work very relaxing and enjoy working outside on the beautifull hills properties. It is much better for the soul than the constant stress of ebay. It is a major project and wont happen overnight, but things are coming along well at the moment. I,m hoping to cut the umbilical chord from ebay in another twelve months or so. Wish me luck.

Its a pity your phone call wasn't recorded to phone (some phones have that option), then you could email the audio as further proof, dunno if paypal or ebay offer that though...

Thanks for your best wishes. Its taking lots of time and every cent I can muster, but is already returning some serious money, ( which is getting ploughed straight back into the project ) so the potential is there. It is exciting and if it works, will be a major tick off of the bucket list as I have always thought it would be a very enjoyable way to earn a living. The hills properties are in 1200 mm. rainfall country with big trees and plenty of wildlife, green grass and little spring fed streams for six months of the year. The semi arid country is fairly harsh but very healthy grazing country and unlimited underground stock water. With the dry conditions the country is experiencing, sheep are much cheaper to purchase than normal, so this is helping a lot. As I am taking on more leased ground I still have plenty of feed so some things are going my way at the moment. Although I was a shearer for years and have always had a few sheep it is still a bit of a step into the unknown with no safety rope to hang onto.

Re: Bend over, breath deeply, it doesnt really hurt !!!

I don't think you will need that safety rope.

From all the posts you have made on this forum, you strike me as a very intelligent person who does a lot of thinking before he takes the next step.  +++ credit to you.
