First-time seller. I recently sold a small item (a trading card, ~$15). The buyer paid and I mailed the item to them, the funds were cleared and transferred to me, but they're now claiming it wasn't received.
I didn't think to get a tracking number since the sale was small (and the cost of tracking would have been half the cost of the sale!), but now the buyer is claiming the item was not received and requesting a refund.
Is there anything I can do?

sadly, no....anything untracked is not covered....the buyer will win!

nothing you can do, send untracked and you have no proof of delivery.
in future go for tracked.

PS. you have actually sold 7 items, not a first time seller

Yeah, I was worried that would be the case. At least it's only $15.
I guess the best I can do is assume good faith and ask the buyer to retract the cancel request for now and hope it arrives? The delivery has taken a while if it hasn't arrived yet, but not so absurdly long that you'd think it isn't coming.

Yep, thats what scammers do, have the poor innocent buyer cancel the request, than they have no comeback. Just cough up with the refund, its being nearly 4 weeks.

Buyer should not cancel request unless the item arrives. Once closed a case can't be reopened, which puts the buyer outside of the MBG. Not prudent from their point of view.
Tracked letters are well under half the sale price, so that excuse is a furphy. Check AP website for Tracked Letters.
You made a mistake, learn from it. And read the FAQs on how selling on eBay works.

Yeah, if I can't refund once they've closed it that's no good. Live and learn I guess.

issue refund. move on. you have no options whatsoever. Welcome to ebay 🙂
