Hi eBay community,
I'm a little bit confused about eBay selling fees. I've read all the info I can find, but I still have one small question.
I have only ever sold one item and have just listed a second one in which it appears my total selling fees are computed at $7+. That's all OK (based on what I have been reading), but this seems to be a discrepancy with the first item. My PayPal account was only a couple of dollars less than the item I sold first time around, and yet the item I sold was more expensive than today's.
Any ideas why this should happen? Is there some kind of concession on a first-time sale?
I'd love to understand.

Hi ebay charge normally a 10% on total sales including postage,
so if i sell a item for $14.00 free postage ebay fees are 1.40
if i sell item for $10.00 + $4.00 postage ebay fees are $1.00 then when the buyer pays you get charged 0.40 cents when they complete chechout.
If you use extra fetures such as subtitle you get charged for these features.
if you go to your account you can see what you have to pay.
If you use ebay postage these appear on your account a Day latter, and if any postage discount 10% for the 500g rebate $7.20 ebay postage you normmally recive these after the your fees are paid.
Total fees ebay paypal fees are around 15-16% of what you receive,
a good tool to work out profit. is at

hope this helps Anthony

Not sure where 15-16% total fees comes from?
Ebay fees for non-stores are 9.9%, paypal (domestic rates) is 30c per transaction plus 2.4%.... equals 13.3% of the total paid by the buyer plus 30c.
If you are within your 40 free listings then the insertion fee is waived. After that there is a table of fees here:
http://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/ebay-for-business/about-store-packages.
You can also look out on these boards for listing specials, there is one going at the moment for non-stores of 150 free listings.
With postage, at the moment there is a 10% discount special; a 500g bag is $6.48. Of course there are many postage options at different rates.
Hope that helps.

The 15-16% would be fairly average for a lot of sellers. This is because of the 10% FVF on postage. This is not part of the sale price of the item but adds signifigantly to the fees that ebay take from the sellers profit. I run two medium sized stores, plus sell by auction on a private account with free listings and pay between 15% and 20% in fees to ebay. Since the FVF on postage came in my profit margins have been slimmed down quite a bit, taking the cream off my sales.

Black poppy,
how are you getting $6.48 for postage? Is that for 500gms your own packaging?

Ebay have a 10% discount at the moment on 500g assessed parcels. So when you do the postage label in ebay you select Australia Post Parcel Post Parcel and put in the dimensions and weight at under whatever your item is at under 500g, the postage should be $7.20. Ebay give you a 10% refund which you can see in your invoice about a day later. So the postage is only $6.48 or something (I might be a few cents out). The promotion runs until 31 December.
There was another thread on this about packaging - I'll get in trouble for this by other posters but I use the ebay satchels and haven't had a problem - I have been lodging them at the PO regularly for the past few months and no-one has ever batted an eye as they happily scan them. But other sellers here feel you should turn the bag inside out and stick the label on. Or you can recycle old tough bags etc which I've done sometimes as well. Up to you.

I dunno, mine all sit around 12% on the invoices, and that's a bit higher because the store fees are included in the percentage. Depends depends depends

It does depend. I find there is no one size fits all scenario on ebay. I checked out your listed items and the differences I spotted where that your postage costs on average would be a smaller % of total sales price and differences in listing numbers. I list many more items than the four hundred ( I think it is ) freebies that come with my store packages, so are paying quite a bit in monthly listing fees. The higher FVF I pay is also due to postage being a greater % of my total sales price. The stores average around the 15-16% fees mentioned by someone else earlier and the private account which sells lower value bulkier items ( general house and shed clean up stuff plus a few collectables ) runs close to 20% in fees. People that sell cheaper, bulkier items are paying much higher percentages of profit in fees to ebay.
