the difference is that with payment by PayPal you can get your money back if the item is not as described, damaged in transit or not sent. Try doing that with direct deposit.

What K1000 said. repeated!
Paypal is marvellous if you're a buyer.
It's a bit like having a middleman (or is that middleperson these days?). You're not paying direct to a stranger, which was always fraught with a bit of danger. You're paying paypal and if things go wrong, they will most likely cover you if you follow their procedures. It's like an insurance policy.
I have not had to use it often but I did once, after buying 2 vouchers @ about $40 each (not through ebay), then discovering a few weeks later that the company had gone into receivership. I got my money back, but had I paid directly into the company's bank account, i very much doubt I would have.
Also, with paypal, you aren't sharing yoru credit card details with the company, only with paypal.
I would not use anything else but paypal on ebay -unless you're picking up an item, when cash is fine.

what springy said. Repeated!
Also, with PayPal you can sign up to get return post costs paid by PayPal up to $45, which would cover a lot of the cost of returning items domestically, which is the type of transaction members might consider paying by direct deposit.
Also, payment by PayPal reinforces your eBay Money Back Guarantee buyer protections.
@pbutt, try getting the same level of buyer protection with Direct Deposit into a stranger’s bank account! I’d be interested to hear from you about why you think that Direct Deposit would be equal with PayPal in terms of buyer protections!

Looks like pbutlera42 just sold a high priced item and didn't like the fees.

Once a store has been set up with GTC listings it is fairly easy just to let it tick along and run down stock, even if the store owner spends most of their time on another business venture.
Clarry100 was a full time ebay seller three years ago and a regular, respected contributor to the boards. I understand he now spends most of his time doing other stuff and rarely comes to the boards anymore,............ soooo...... his plans have probably worked out to a large extent.
I started selling on ebay, full time around the same time as clarry and used to communicate privately with him from time to time. Like clarry I now spend quite a bit of time in another, non internet related business. The only difference being I,m still selling enough on ebay to make it worth hanging around. In the last 6 months sales have actually picked up quite a bit to the extent that I find I,m spending more time on ebay now than the past couple of years. Not really by choice. Its just that if stuff keeps on selling, it has to be packed and new listings done. Sort of a self fullfilling prophecy really that we dont have a lot of control over.

They should have listed on a weekend, or during a fee free promotion! I keep getting these monthly invoices with "you don't need to pay!". I get all disheartened, because in the past it meant I'd not sold anything. Nope, all my sales have been from fee free listings. Go me!

Yep, even though I have some listings not covered by the weekend promos, my Ebay/paypal fees combined are running at about
6% of total monthly sales.
