How about Ebay lower the listing and FVF for used or second hand items?

Ebay is a big buisness and i hope a big contributor to the worlds big issues.

I would like to see ebay foster support for and encourage recycling, reusing, reasigning etc, buy reducing the listing and FVF for used or second hand items.

Would this not be a good thing for Ebay ethically, not to mention the good will fostered towards many owners of all things used.

I would feel much better about Ebay as a large business, because i know they love to cut deals with big 'mega' sellers that opperate out of China and other mass manufacturers of new bits and peices that we all love to buy cheap and so If ebay evened the playing feild, just a little, to offset the new markets, i think alot of people would appreciate their more resposible corporate outlook.

next time I drove past it was gone.

a few days later, it was out on the footpath again with another free sign on it...

When I do my books I keep new and second hand items separate, the new items I have a column for the purchase price, the second hand items I have used so as far as I am concerned I have had my money's worth out of them and so ascribe them  zero value. I don't care if something I have worn cost me $100 or $5 it is pure profit IMO whatever it sells for.

There's always that old tale about someone wanting to get rid of an old fridge after buying a brand new one. The old one was a bit beat up but still in good working order, so they put it out the front of their house with a big sign that said FREE GIVE AWAY - WORKS WELL.

A few days later, no takers, so they decided to change tact and altered the sign. The next one said FOR SALE - $100.

When they got up the next moring, the fridge was gone (and no $100 to be seen anywhere Smiley LOL ).

.

There's making a profit (yes, this is what business is all about) and then there's making a killing.

To apply the same sorts of costs on selling 2nd hand items,as is done with brand new items from B&M stores etc is,well, appalling to say the least.

Those who once offered a platform for the little guy to have a means to "get by" (and maybe even make his/her life a little better) are now pulling that platform out from underneath him by charging fees that are equivilant to or higher than the taxes paid when you buy a brand new item from a B&M store....effectively decreasing the little guys profit to a point where selling on ebay is no longer viable ....on SECOND HAND GOODS???

The rich get richer, the poor get the picture.

Second hand goods, like anything else, sell for whatever somebody is willing to pay for them so the price is decided entirely by the buyer, not ebay and if you have worn something for a few months and then sell it why should you pay less fees than someone who has had to shell out money to buy new stock and price their items to cover the cost of taxes, possibly GST, business overheads and the sale price has to cover the cost of unsold stock etc too.

If you want to see overpriced second hand goods go look in most of the OP shops, I have seen second hand items costing more than the shop selling them new has them on sale for!

Ebay has some flexibility around listings for second-hand goods such as collectibles, so despite protests to the contrary, ebay is not adverse to interfering in the market.

Second hand goods are like antiques the older they are the more they cost just go ask any pawn broker they'll tell you.And as the saying goes the items are worth as much as someone is willing to pay for them for example a house at auction sells for $1M but is it worth that much well of course not but someone paid that amount so now it is.

Re: How about Ebay lower the listing and FVF for used or second hand items?

I sell new and used items in about equal numbers, but I pay for my used items, as well as my new ones. I buy from stores, privately, on eBay and often even do "trade ins".

I can't see why used gear should attract a lower FVF - in fact, the argument might also be made (not by me), that if an item didn't cost the seller anything, then they should pay a higher fee because it's nearly all profit!

The fee is assessed on the selling price, not the source or profit margin, whether you aquired an item free of charge, bought it from an op shop, stole it, grew out of it or paid retail.

I really can't imagine that lowering the fee for used items would spark any sort of save-the-planet recycling upswing on a corporate profit driven site like eBay!

Cheers,

Marina.
