July 2019 Sales Terrible!!

One thing people need to remember is, when tax payers earning between $20,000 and $126,000 submit their tax this year, they are getting a $1080 bonus back from their tax, on top of what they'd already be getting back. It is supposed to encourage spending. They may well buy from you because they have been wanting one of these things, but didn't previously have the money for it.

Hopefully this bonus will serve it's purpose and get people to buy. They may buy locally, they may decide to buy online. It could happen anywhere between now and November.

When several of our local op shops start putting up "50% off everything" signs, you get the impression it's across the board and yes, July sales for us have been pretty dismal.  Election, winter, tax time, school holidays it's been a disruptive quarter... excellent time to buy a new car, dealers are bleeding bad.

When op shops have sales it's more likely that they've been getting way too much stock in, which is probably because people buy so many new clothes they can't fit them in their wardrobe.  When the economy is bad, op shop sales don't slow, they increase.

Thats exactly what is happening at the moment. my sister in law manages two Op Shops for a church charity group. They are getting more donations than they can handle and are giving donated stock free to the larger chain op shops just to move it on. Their sales are up around 10% above average at the moment.

As for my ebay sales. They are ticking along reasonably well and get an instant kick up when I take the time to list new stock. All up I,m reasonably happy with my ebay sales considering things are tight in the economy at the moment.

It's very true about if you put in the work, sales increase. I've got the $1.10 weekend on 2 out of 3 of my accounts, so will aim to put new items up over the weekend. Usually when I list a heap of new stuff, my sales do increase quite a bit.

Could you put up the link for the weekend deal please? I thought they had all finished and have so many items in my unsold list. I had to end them all before they rolled over with this silly good till cancelled thing as I would heve got charged a listing fee for all those over my 40 quota per month

The $1080 was not quite all it was advertised to be by Mssr Frydenberg.

Only some will be getting the full amount based on the parameters below:

  • If you earned between $48,000 and $90,000 in 2018-19, you will receive the full $1,080 offset. Winning!
  • If you earned less than $48,000, youโ€™ll receive $255 plus 7.5% of every dollar you earned over $37,000. Calculator needed
  • If you earned between $90,000 and $126,000, youโ€™ll receive $1,080 less 3% of every dollar over $90,000. Calculator needed

That's the thing about election promises; there are usually crossed fingers involved.

July 2019 Sales Terrible!!

My sales have nearly come to a standstill since May.

I have nearly given up

Which Ebay want the small time sellers to do anyway,

Even though they deny this.

Yes, it was very poorly worded and not at all what they implied. People were lead to believe it was like the K Rudd bonus where everyone received the $900 as a gift, into their bank account, to go spend on what you liked. Boost the economy. I think it did boost it for a very short time.

Then we hear of this current one, for low to middle income earners. As there didn't appear to be any fine print at the time, I took it to mean $0 income up to the $126K that they said, would get it. As a gift, like last time. To go forth and spend. Boost the economy.

Mr Tippy was out of work for most of the last financial year (ill health), starting back at work in March. He earned just under the threshold, so is getting all his tax back (great feeling to earn $18,000 tax free!). I'd heard lodging the return triggered the bonus, so I lodged.

I then did my tax and when I clicked to calculate the estimate, the $1080 showed up in the breakdwn. So, despite Mr Tippy being a low income earner for the last financial year, he doesn't get it. That means the ones that could really use it the most, aren't eligible.

I then realised that it's not a gift from the government in that sense. You are merely getting more of your tax back. Still a gift of sorts, but not like they implied. If you owe tax this year, even if you earned say $60,000 where you'd get the full bonus, then you lose part, or all of the bonus.

Therefore, anyone earning under $20,000 misses out entirely. That includes anyone on the dole or pension full time that has no other income. I think it's wrong that the aged pensioners are going to miss out because they could have really used it to pay their winter heating bill. As I said, the ones who really need it the most, miss out.

I know a few people that are on a pension, or some type of benefits, and they were mentally spending the money when it was announced. One person was going to take her kids away for a weekend, being the first time they'd ever have been able to go anywhere for a holiday since the kids were born. Others were going to take the kids to the zoo. All kinds of sensible things they wouldn't normally be able to afford. None would be spending it on grog or smokes because none drink or smoke (I know there would be plenty that would spend it on that though).

So, the ones that would have gone and spent it to boost the economy, aren't getting it. Good one!

I also wasn't aware of the higher and lower end of the bracket only getting a portion. That's insane, especially for the lower end. Glad I'm in the middle of the middle!
