Been trying to find out if I can insist on payment before posting item to purchaser. Don't care if the payment is held by EBay

Under no circumstances send before payment has been made. This buyer sounds very dodgy. I'd be considering cancelling this order. I'm sure there might be a 'Problem with the address'.

I hope I'm not too far off topic.
The kind hearted new seller should be wary of 'would you mind posting straight away so as to get the item before xmas, the recipent (who may or may not be seriously ill or have a disability) will be so dissapointed if it doesn't arrive on time for the big day'. I've paid (they haven't) by credit card.
If the payment doesn't show in managed payments, you don't post.

I don't post until the item is shown as paid.
No prudent sellers would.

Payment is through eBay. Unless and until the sale shows in your payments tab, it hasn't been paid for.
Once it is, regardless of holds, you are good to post.
But not before.

The fact that you've even had to ask the question is a worry.
If you recognise any of the signs of a scam that we've already mentioned, cease all contact with the "buyer", cancel the sale and report the user ID to eBay.
And remember, even an ID with feedback may be a hijacked account.

eBay don't provide the shipping address until after payment is made - so you can't ship anything before the buyer pays.

A scammer will probably have given the seller an address and as the OP felt the need to post the question ,
as etb said "The kind hearted seller" may have believed the scammer.

Sorry, but scammer or not, the shipping address is simply NOT disclosed until after the payment is made.
There is no excuse for any seller to ever step away from correct procedure by electing to ship to a different address than the one provided by eBay.
So once more for the OP... if you check the order details, the shipping address won't appear until AFTER payment is made. Common sense dictates that you should NEVER ship anything before you have the shipping address.

You can get the address from the 'Send invoice' function. Not that I'm suggesting it in this case. i would be doing the exact opposite, in fact.

I didn't know that as I have never sent an invoice... but upon checking the prepare invoice page, I see the buyer's address but no delivery address.
What I do know is the buyer enters their delivery address and selects the postage service during the checkout process. Until this process is completed, the seller does not know or have access to any details relating to shipping the item.
On the order details page, the seller will see the following information
Awaiting payment
The buyer hasn't paid for this order yet
Postage
Buyer selected postage service

Buyer location

Again, there is no excuse for any seller to step away from correct procedure by shipping anywhere other than the delivery address provided by eBay.
