eBay's payment policy is appalling

I've been buying and selling on eBay for 20 years.  I've sold over 80 items - most recently, 2 months ago - and have a 100% rating and loads of glowing comments from happy buyers.  But eBay have now classified me as a 'new/infrequent' seller who is a risk to buyers so are holding my payments for a few weeks.  Phoned to complain and was advised that because I'm not selling weekly, their system is classifying me as high-risk - hence the payment hold.

For f*cks sake - this is ridiculous.  eBay are twisting their system so that they can hold onto your money for an indefinite period.  What's the point of having a perfect score and over 150 transactions throughout a 20 year period if you're going to be treated with such disregard.  Am thoroughly disgusted.

You can be disgusted and consider it an attack on your personal integrity, but the reality is that holds have been implemented to combat scam sellers, who love to hijack the accounts of unsuspecting infrequent users.

80 sales in 20 years, I would say that is pretty infrequent  and it would also appear that you don't spend much time keeping up with changes to ebay policys.

80 selling transactions is a tiny drop over a 20 year period, and definitely tells us that you are an infrequent seller.

There is a reason they have implemented this rule.

There are some sellers who are not active for ages, but have good feedback. Their accounts get hacked, with the scammer offering low cost sought-after items (like pS5's or high quality brand name clothing), that people flock to, pay money and then the scammer disappears with the funds. The true owner of the account is usually unaware of all this happening because they are not an active seller (until they start getting disputes/chargebacks etc)

It's not an indefinite period either - it's 21 days. You still need to post out within your handling time though, or incur a defect.

If the item is delivered in say 10 days, contact CS and they will often release the funds quicker.

Perfect score is irrelevant - the hold is there so they can make sure your account isn't compromised. If you were last active 2 years ago, for example, and then came back in October and started selling a number of $100+ items in a short period, that could well flag your account.

If you intend to be a regular seller going forward, the holding period will fall away once you consistently show that your items are being delivered with no follow up disputes.

Ebay are hardly twisting the system- this is their playground and their rules, so not sure why you are throwing your toys. Most of us stay up to date with Ebay changes, as there have been many of them over the years and it pays to be aware of what the current guidelines are.

EDIT @Guttterpunkz - snap! I said the same thing in a much longer version, lol

For many years I told on this platform different ID and had a lot more sales than you.  I gave it away but would have the same thing happen if I were to start relisting.  My suggestion is to just move on.   Get over it and just keep going as you are if you keep up your listing.  Really nothing to do with what you think or not.

Hi Jelly,  Yeah I tend to be a bit straight to the point, some even say abrupt.

(To twyngwyn) - with all due respect. 150 orders in 20 years is an infrequent seller.

Ebay has come a long way since the early days.  If you want to sell the odd item here and there perhaps gumtree or Facebook is more suited to your needs.  Ebay has developed into a highly automated, API based platform that offers sellers reach and the ability to transact at scale.
