When I select to 'contact member' from the link of a sold item, I get the error 'safari can't open page'. I then select the option again and it works. This has been happening for the past week.

Have you reported it to eBay ?
Are you using the app or the full site when it happens?
Is it the same seller each time?

Thanks everyone for your comments. It's still happening. The only reason that I put the problem in the community message board was because ebay said that they read it. Clearly not, all I have received is an email with a link to your responses.

Using the full screen view on my PC and it's a different seller each time.

Better off contacting Live Chat (depending on who you get, some staff are helpful, some are not) but don't let them fob you off with the line "We will escalte it to tech support and get back to you in 24 hours' .....that is another fib
If Live Chat are'nt helpful, go to the Have us call you option
(both those are under the help tab)
Email replies (when there is one at all) is bot generated

Which broswer are you using? eBay no longer supports IE so only very few people are still able to use it without problems
