Damaged in the mail - I tried to fix - ended up breaking it

Hi guys, an item I bought (a second hand internal hard drive) was damaged in the mail, it appears. Two of the pins were bent.

I thought, no biggie, I'll straighten them. One of these pins broke off.

So what recourse do I have, considering this? None? I didn't take photos as I thought I could fix it.

Contact the seller and explain exactly what happened, you never know, they may be feeling generous or be able to offer a replacement at a reduced price.  No harm in trying, but please be honest with them,

I very much doubt you have any recourse as you admit you broke it.  If you noticed it bent when it arrived, that was the time to take action.

Correct. none

Especially since you admitted on a public forum you broke it

OK no worries, for future reference. The item was packed inadequately, I might add. Plenty of room in the package for the contents to jiggle around and not enough protection of the pins

I filed a refund request, and explained that I broke one of the bent pins while trying to straighten them. The seller got back to me and kindly offered a refund. 👏

I think the packing and packaging was what caused the problem to occur.

Outstanding seller, I'd be going back to them in the future !

Why, would sellers usually be confrontational?

Not necessarily, but they were under no obligation to refund as you admitted breaking the pin.

Must admit you were lucky,  and the sad thing is the seller most likely felt pressured into it, knowing that they could have copped a negative (not saying you would).

Future lesson if it is not right, don't try to ''fix'' it, report it back to the seller.
