Bought a fake Logitech mouse from a dodgy seller, initiated the refund process.
I understand that currently I'll have to return the item to the seller in order to get my refund.
However I don't want to send the item back to the seller for someone to fall victim to it again.
Will ebay be alright with me destroying the item (cutting the mouse cord), and issue the refund upon evidence of that destroyed mouse?

I intend to.
I don't want others to fall victim to this kind of nefarious BS, hence my motivation to destroy the mouse.

less personal anger, and more that I don't want others to receive the same fake product that I did.
Simply returning it, without ebay intervention, is just passing the buck to someone else. A bit of NIMBYism, which I dislike.
Sure I'll get my money back if I just do the refund. Then the seller gets their fake mouse back, suffers no loss, and can say that same item on ebay again.
problems not really solved, until that seller's ill-obtained funds are frozen by ebay, then kicked off the platform. From the listing I can see that the seller has already sold 11 of the same product.

let's support the sellers by returning the fake goods back to them, so they could scam other ebay buyers.
what a nice ecosystem.

I buy Logitech mice from B&Ms normally. It's not like they are rare.
I suspect the price was way less than RRP? Otherwise why would you buy from a random seller.
As said, if the seller wants and is prepared to pay for return, you are required to return it in received condition. And get your money back
If you want to teach yourself a lesson in economics, damage it before return. And not receive your money back.

The link to you tube user, with no indication they are a representative or authorised on behalf of logi tech, is absolute rubbish, when it comes to proof an item is counterfeit. If you wish to have the item declared counterfeit and wish to advise ebay to that effect, then the item must be officially certified as counterfeit by logitech.
As far as deliberately destroying the item, sending it back, and expecting a refund, what that says about you as a buyer makes me fume, being xmas I am trying to be polite, Somehow I wish you and all buyers of your ilk, would close their accounts and BO.
You have a right to return the item for a refund
The seller has a right to expect the item is returned as you received it

And just to add, how do you intend to prove you have destroyed the item you received,
Oh here is a video of me cutting A mouse cord,
I know exactly what ebay will think of that as evidence

I think we would need to see the item number, to read the ad to see if if was actually being passed off as a logitech mouse or if it was advertised as unbranded but compatible with logitec or whatever.
Some ads on ebay can be very deceptive to new buyers. I have to say those ads are usually from Chinese sellers though, who might use a brand name in the title but when you see the item specifics, it becomes clear that it is unbranded.
You say you initiated the refund process but I hope you didn't do so on the claim it was fake, because unless you can prove it, you may lose. Better to open with not as described or faulty. Too late now.
See how you go, anyway. Not all sellers ask for the item to be returned. If they do, be aware they need to pay return postage, not you. Insist on it. If they won't, let ebay know within your claim.
Tempting as it may be to you to cut the cord, I would advise against it because I presume you never opened a claim against the item on the basis of any damage, so the seller would be able to say that it was not received in the same condition it was sent.
Your main priority is to get a refund. You can leave feedback, be very careful how you word it or the seller may have it removed. After that, let other buyers look after themselves, just concentrate on getting your refund.

Let's not support dodgy sellers to start with
I do not buy from such sellers, I am not supporting such sellers by doing so
You say you want to destroy the item to 'stop others being scammed' = not going to achieve a thing expect it means you won't get your refund
You are not scammed if you were sent something other than what you purchased, as it was described in the item description. You open and follow through with an item not as described dispute, as already said
What is the item number?
Where is the seller registered?
What is their feedback like?

"As far as deliberately destroying the item, sending it back, and expecting a refund"
Nobody said any of that, read the post again instead of making assumptions
May your Christmas be as pleasant as you are, and the Happy New Year as well

It is exactly what you said in your opening post
Read what you wrote again, which was
'Will ebay be alright with me destroying the item (cutting the mouse cord), and issue the refund upon evidence of that destroyed mouse?'
No assumptions needed, that is the question you asked
No use in abusing other members for you poor buying choices
And nobody is fuming
